Good news out of Atlanta today as the Atlanta Braves cut ties with Julio Lugo today. Lugo was signed to a minor league deal in May. He was called up at the end of June and designated Diory Hernandez for assignment. The Braves had hoped that Lugo’s veteran presence and his productivity in the past would be realized as a utility player.
These hopes were not realized, however. Lugo struggled with the Braves. He hit .136/.208/.136. There was nothing that Lugo added to the team, except for a warm body and insurance if Alex Gonzalez would have gone down to injury.
The Braves made a trade for Jack Wilson on Wednesday and it became apparent that Lugo was expendable and his days were numbered. Wilson was on the disabled list and was activated today.
In the event of an injury, the Braves have Brandon Hicks or Hernandez still in their organization that can be called upon for a back-up role. Let’s hope that nothing happens. However, they are an upgrade over Lugo.
