Mlb-baseballl-2010-august
On field officials for the most part do a pretty good job keeping themselves out of the way throughout the course of a game, except for last night. During the 9th inning of the ALCS between the Red Sox and Tigers, Detroit catcher Brayan Pena had to hustle over to third base when Will Middlebrooks made the attempt to take the bag on a routine ground ball. However even though Prince Fielder’s throw across the diamond beat Middlebrooks, Pena’s tag was disrupted by the third base umpire who was literally on top of the base. Not that the play itself mattered all that much. Boston went on to win the game still 4-3 while Detroit will do everything they can to block the Red Sox’ chances to get to the World Series in Game’s 6 and 7 back at Fenway. h/t: The Big Lead

Jon Lester Bobbles Jose Iglesias Bunt, Manages to Scoop Ball, Flip It to Mike Napoli for Out (GIF)

Jose Iglesias has been a bit of a defensive wizard this season, and during the ALCS, but he got a taste of his own medicine Thursday night during Game 5. Iglesias laid down a bunt in the fifth inning, and Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester hustled to glove the ball and ended up bobbling it, then scooping it up with enough time to make a hands-free toss to Mike Napoli at first base for...

Tigers need two wins at Fenway

DETROIT The Detroit Tigers now find themselves in a position to make history or go home after losing Game 5 to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night. Since the best-of-seven format was adopted in 1985, only four American League Championship Series were knotted at 2-2, as this one was. The Game 5 winner went onto reach the World Series in all four of those previous situations....

ALCS Game 6 preview

The Detroit Tigers havent played in a Game 7 in 45 years. But the potential for that exists if Max Scherzer can beat the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, and provide Justin Verlander a chance to start a winner-take-all game Sunday night at Fenway Park. Scherzer has struck out 26 in 16 innings during this postseason, while posting a 2.25 ERA and frustrating batters by holding them to...

Recap: Napoli leads offensive attack to 4-3 win

The Red Sox head back to Fenway up 3-2 in the ALCS thanks to a 4-3 win over the Tigers tonight in Detroit. The big story: There was actually some offense for both teams. The Tigers and Red Sox each had double-digit hits tonight, despite respectable performances by Jon Lester and Anibal Sanchez. Neither starter was at his best -- especially Sanchez early on -- but neither gave a...

Jose Iglesias makes incredible catch on David Ortiz blooper (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias has some of the best hands in baseball. He’s a below average hitter for the most part, but the 23-year-old more than makes up for it with his wizardry in the field. That was on full display with the catch he made to rob […]

Jose Iglesias shows off his range with great catch in Game 5

The Red Sox knew the caliber of defense they were giving up when they dealt Jose Iglesias to the Tigers earlier this season, and Iggy made sure to remind them in spectacular fashion during Game 5 of the ALCS on Thursday. Iglesias showed off his great range and flashed the leather to rob David Ortiz of a base hit in the third inning. Even Ortiz walked away applauding. The post Jose...

Report: Red Sox Sign Cuban Right-Hander Dalier Hinojosa

Just because the Red Sox are vying for a World Series this season doesn’t mean they’re not working hard to ensure future success. The Red Sox have signed Cuban right-hander Dalier Hinojosa, according to Baseball America’s Ben Badler. WEEI.com’s Alex Speier has since confirmed the report, and CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the Sox will pay Hinojosa a $4 million...

ALCS Game 6 Preview: Red Sox One Win Away From World Series

Tonight’s pitching match-up will feature each teams best pitcher from the regular season. At this time last year Ben Cherington was working on assembling this Red Sox team.  I doubted some moves at first but came around once spring training started and just felt a new culture with this team. Now the Red Sox are one win away from the World Series and a date with the Cardinals once...

Tim McCarver, Joe Buck Share Birthday Cake, Awkward High Five During Red Sox-Tigers Broadcast (GIFs)

Baseball announcers have a tendency to get a little goofy during midseason blowouts, but you don’t usually see it happen when teams are playing for a trip to the World Series. The Tigers built a seven-run early in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series on Wednesday, and although the Red Sox eventually rallied back to make a game of it, FOX commentators Joe Buck and Tim...

Shane Victorino is giving up on switch-hitting again

Shane Victorino has hit exclusively from the right side for the past six weeks so it was a bit of a surprise to see him bat left-handed against Anibal Sanchez in Game 5 of the ALCS on Thursday night. However after going 0-for-3 against Sanchez he flipped back to the right side against relievers Jose Veras and Al Alburquerque. And from what he told Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com he...

ALCS Game 6: Tigers at Red Sox - Fenway ready to celebrate a Sox AL championship

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer ONE is the key number. ONE half of the World Series matchup is decided. The other half could be decided tonight. That’s because the Boston Red Sox are ONE win away from being crowned American League Champions. We won’t let that sink in just yet, because the Sox need to score at least ONE more run than the Detroit Tigers in order to proclaim...
