The Howard- the feat accomplished by a player who hits a homerun, commits an error, and strikes out all within the same game.Seattle Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan is one of the finest defensive players in the game.  He's a regular on Web Gems and has one of the highest Defensive Wins Above Replacement (aka- DWAR) over the past four seasons (12.4 DWAR).  His bat on the other is atrocious.  He's currently batting .193/.553 and is only a career .244/.633 hitter.  However, when he has connected for the long ball this season, he's regularly turned it into The Howard, which is ironic considering his superior fielding.  Yesterday Ryan hit only his 3rd homerun of the season and committed only his 9th error, yet it was his 2nd Howard.  That's noteworthy.Phillies Stuff:*How much does Halladay's 4.40 ERA and 2012 performance overall with lengthy DL stint worry you?*The Phils have to win 5 out of the last 9 games to ensure their 10th consecutive winning season.  The Philli...

The Beginning of the End for the Phillies

Was it over before it began because of a missing Howard? (PHOTO: AP) …Or maybe the beginning of the end was really nine days ago when the Phillies lost three-of-four to the worst team in the NL, the Houston Astros. Maybe it was the beginning of the end when Carlos Ruiz went down with a foot injury and missed the dog days of summer. Maybe it was the beginning of the end when Roy...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Better half

Returning warriors, like Chase Utley, have guided the Philadelphia Phillies to a possible wild-card berth with a strong 2nd half.  Can Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard inspire this squad to compete beyond the regular schedule? TAL’S HANDY CAPS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I will publish after every battle that is not washed out.  I will have many summer-long highlights of puzzle...

Darin Ruf's first major league hit is a home run

Phillies fans are excited about Darin Ruf, who spent the year with AA Reading and broke the team record for home runs in a season, blasting 38 dingers on the season. However, he turned 26 in July and was way too old for the level. While that's true, the fact that he's a power threat is also true, regardless of age. In Tuesday's Phillies-Nationals game, Ruf cracked his...

Phils Drop Series, Wild Card Chances are Bleak

Just two hits by the offense and some lackluster defense led to another loss on Sunday, as the Phillies dropped the series finale to the Braves, by a score of 2-1. Roughly a year following the Phillies contributing to Atlanta’s historic collapse down the stretch and missing the playoffs in 2011, it seemed to be the Braves that did in the Phils this time around, as the team that...

Phillies' Halladay iffy for next start -- and rest of season

The Philadelphia Phillies have a chance Thursday to start a pitcher with 198 career wins, two Cy Young Awards and $20 million in annual salary against the Washington Nationals. Yet for reasons physical, precautionary and a little fuzzy, they are resisting committing one more start this season to Roy Halladay. Halladay, 35, labored through 1 2/3 innings Saturday, surrendering...

Pregame: Phillies Begin the Final Lap

Well we're in territory we haven't been in lately. Unless the Phillies win out and a bunch of people lose, the smart money is on the notion that they are playing the final 9 games. Sharing that idea could possibly be Charlie Manuel as he calls on Darin Ruf to make his first major league start in LF. We've only seen a few pinch hit ABs so far so this is the first...

Loss to Braves Kills Phillies Playoff Hopes

While they are not “officially” out of it yet, the Phillies have dropped to 5 games out of the Wild Card race after 2 straight losses to the Braves. With 4 teams in front of them and only 9 games to go, the Phillies playoff hopes are all but dead. On the mound today, Cliff Lee put forward a valiant effort, working in and out of trouble throughout the game. Despite his many challenges...

Nationals-Phillies Preview

While the Washington Nationals are getting closer to securing the first division title in franchise history, the Philadelphia Phillies' chances of reaching the postseason for the sixth straight year are dwindling. Coming off a tough weekend, Philadelphia looks to get back on track behind Cole Hamels on Tuesday night when it hosts the NL East-leading Nationals in the opener of...

Rangers 3, Mariners 2

Ryan Dempster allowed two runs and six hits over six-plus innings and Mike Napoli and Geovany Soto homered to lead the Texas Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday and preserve a four-game lead over the Oakland A's in the AL West. With Oakland's 5-4 win over the New York Yankees earlier Sunday, the Rangers were looking to avoid a sweep by the scuffling...
