It was precisely the type of situation for which the Boston Red Sox traded for left-handed reliever Craig Breslow. Yet Breslow didn't pitch. With lefty-hitting slugger Prince Fielder coming to the plate in the fifth inning Wednesday night and the Red Sox trailing the Detroit Tigers 5-1 after Miguel Cabrera's two-run homer, manager Bobby Valentine elected to stick with starter Aaron Cook. Fielder swatted a first-pitch curveball to straightaway center field for a solo homer to extended the Tigers' lead. "He was up, ready," Valentine said of Breslow. "(Wanted to) let Bres start an inning clean the first time he comes in, you know?" The Red Sox beat Tuesday's trade deadline by acquiring Breslow from the Arizona Diamondbacks for reliever Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik, a move designed to give them another lefty in the bullpen.
