It was precisely the type of situation for which the Boston Red Sox traded for left-handed reliever Craig Breslow.

Yet Breslow didn't pitch.

With lefty-hitting slugger Prince Fielder coming to the plate in the fifth inning Wednesday night and the Red Sox trailing the Detroit Tigers 5-1 after Miguel Cabrera's two-run homer, manager Bobby Valentine elected to stick with starter Aaron Cook. Fielder swatted a first-pitch curveball to straightaway center field for a solo homer to extended the Tigers' lead.

"He was up, ready," Valentine said of Breslow. "(Wanted to) let Bres start an inning clean the first time he comes in, you know?"

The Red Sox beat Tuesday's trade deadline by acquiring Breslow from the Arizona Diamondbacks for reliever Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik, a move designed to give them another lefty in the bullpen.

Despite arriving at Fenway Park only an hour or so before the game, Breslow entered after Fielder's homer and got the next four outs, allowing only a leadoff single to Delmon Young in the sixth inning.

"It probably would've been nice to be able to settle in a little bit, but at the same time, to get out there and get my feet wet is also nice," Breslow said. "Sometimes, when you have a little time to think about your surroundings, it doesn't work out so well."

Breslow, a native of Trumbull, Conn., made 13 appearances for the Red Sox in 2006. And ever since he left the organization, he has imagined returning. Over the past two seasons with the Athletics, he has often heard his name linked to the Red Sox in trade rumors.

"I thought that ship had sailed when the rumors came and went the last two years," Breslow said. "I guess there's something to be said for when all's quiet, that's when something's brewing. The first time I was here, I was filling in at times, shuffling back and forth between here and Triple-A. This time hopefully I can contribute."
