Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie had to leave Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees after injuring his right calf while chasing a foul popup and falling into a camera well.

It happened in the bottom of the third inning as Yankees batter Mark Teixeira hit a foul popup down the third base side. Lawrie chased the ball and dove into the camera well for the ball, but was unable to make the catch as the ball bounced out of his glove.

Lawrie flipped over and tried to hold onto the railing with his right hand in order to brace his fall, but his right calf slammed into an unpadded metal railing on the way down. Lawrie tried to get up but was unable to put any weight on his right leg.

Lawrie left the game immediately afterwards and his injury was reported as a right calf contusion. The NY Daily News reports that he was taken for X-rays. The Blue Jays replaced Lawrie in the lineup with Yunel Escobar, who came off the bench to play shortstop while Omar Vizquel, who started the game at shortstop, moved over to play third.

Although we hate to see anybody injured, Lawrie is very fortunate in this case as it could have been a lot worse.
