Marco Estrada pitched seven scoreless innings and rookie shortstop Jean Segura hit a double and triple Wednesday night as the surging Milwaukee Brewers stayed in contention for a postseason berth with a 3-1 victory over the fading Pittsburgh Pirates. John Axford worked around Andrew McCutchen's leadoff home run in the ninth inning, his 29th, for his 30th save in 38 opportunities. The homer broke a string of 22 scoreless innings for the Pittsburgh bullpen. Milwaukee has won four straight games, seven of eight and 22 of 28. They entered the day 2 1-2 games behind St. Louis in the race for the second NL wild card. Brewers operating like a well-oiled machine

MILWAUKEE Like clockwork it started. Just as it seemed the well-oiled machine would finally slow down from the maniacal pace it had been running at since the end of August; just as those who had started to believe began to lose the faith and move closer to the cliff, the cogs began to move as if they had been waiting for just the right moment. In calculated, efficient steps,...

Brewers' pitchers look primed for big things

For 26 straight innings, the Milwaukee Brewers' pitching staff hadn't allowed a single run. It was a magnificent feat for a pitching staff that struggled at times with its starters and struggled even more times this season with its bullpen. But for 26 innings, the Brewers had been practically unhittable. It took until the ninth inning of Wednesday night's game against...

Hart returns after missing eight games

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Corey Hart, who missed eight games with ruptured plantar fascia in the arch of his left foot, is in Thursday's lineup for the team's final game of its series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The two-time All-Star's absence hasn't seemed to hurt the Brewers' offense much, as the team is 7-1 since he injured his foot rounding second...

Blazing Brewers chalk up seven steals

MILWAUKEE Jonathan Lucroy took off, not known for his speed, but fully aware that the Milwaukee Brewers had been dominating the Pirates already this game when it came to stealing second base. And sure enough, Lucroy's slide was in time, beating Pirates catcher Rod Barajas again. Barajas, statistically one of baseball's worst catchers when it comes to catching base-stealers...

Brewers have endured lots of twists and turns

MILWAUKEE Imagine for one moment that it's July 26 the trade deadline closing in and you're standing next to Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin. He's on the phone with Anaheim general manager Jerry DiPoto discussing a potential trade that will send Brewers ace Zack Greinke to the Angels for three prospects, including shortstop Jean Segura. He hangs up...

Brewers rally to beat Pirates

Rickie Weeks hit a tying two-run triple and scored the go-ahead run on Aramis Ramirez's single, helping the surging Milwaukee Brewers rally for a 9-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. The Brewers have won five straight, eight of nine and 15 of 19 to climb into the playoff race. They remained 2 1/2 games back of St. Louis for the second NL wild-card slot. Milwaukee...

Brewers hope to sink Pirates for good

MILWAUKEE Despite standing with the same record (74-72), both back by 2.5 games in the battle for National League's second wild-card spot -- both led by NL MVP candidates in Ryan Braun and Andrew McCutchen -- the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates couldn't seem to be any more different heading into Tuesday's start of a three-game series. Twelve games under .500...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Game 148

It’s so easy to write that the Pirates lost to the Brewers.  It’s natural.  Second nature at this point.  It’s not surprising, it’s barely even frustrating.  It’s accepted.  Accepted by the fans for sure, and seemingly accepted by the players.  How else could you explain this drought against the Brewers? First Pitch:  7:05 PM EST Where [...]

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Game 147

I’m not sure what MLB was thinking yesterday.  If the game was that important it could be made up at the end.  Not only that but why was it even a night game?  Most games at Wrigley are day games, including the other three games of this series.  Why have a getaway game at night? [...]
