MILWAUKEE After struggles night after night from a once-consistent bullpen, the Milwaukee Brewers fired longtime bullpen coach Stan Kyles on Monday.
Kyles joined the Brewers in 2009 after coaching in the team's minor league system before that. Lee Tunnell will replace Kyles on an interim basis.
"It is important that we make every effort to try to improve our bullpen performance," general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement. "While Stan is not solely responsible, I felt that this change was the first step and was necessary. Stan has been a loyal member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization for 11 years. His hard work and dedication has been an integral part of the Brewers' success and is greatly appreciated. His professionalism, personality and knowledge will be missed."
Sunday night's game appeared to be the straw that broke the camel's back, as the Brewers blew another early lead as Milwaukee relievers gave up nine runs, eventually costing the Brewers another game in 11 innings.
Tunnell will attempt to reignite a bullpen that leads the major leagues in blown saves and is third-to-last in bullpen ERA (4.80). He had been the minor league pitching coordinator this year his fourth in the Brewers' system. Prior to that, Tunnell worked in the Reds and Rangers organizations.

Do I know how to plan a week to not talk about the Brewers or what? After the Brewers just went 1-9 over their last ten games and traded away one of their most reliable players there is pretty much nothing I'd like to write about less than the Brewers right now. (Especially after Sunday's game. Jeesh.) Yes, I still think that 2013 is going be awesome and we'll return...
Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Norichika Aoki got an infield single on what should have been a double play ball during Saturday's game against the Washington Nationals after his ground ball up the middle hit a rosin bag in the back of the pitcher's mound.
