After being told he wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster, infielder Donnie Murphy exercised an out clause in his contract Wednesday and was granted his release by the Milwaukee Brewers. Signed as a minor league free agent in December, Murphy was competing for a spot on Milwaukee's bench as a utility player, but he saw his chances at a roster spot end when the Brewers signed infielder Yuniesky Betancourt on Tuesday. Murphy, 30, hit .239 with two home runs and six RBI in 46 spring training at-bats. The Brewers were trying to get the veteran infielder experience in the outfield during camp to expand his versatility. Spending the last three years of his career with the Marlins organization, Murphy hit .216 with three home runs and 12 RBI for Miami in 2012. Known more for his glove than his bat, Murphy has made just three errors in the past two seasons. He has hit .205 with 18 home runs and 82 RBI in his seven-year big league career with Kansas City, Oakland and Miami. Follow Andrew Gruman on Twitter.
