The Milwaukee Brewers purchased the contract of right-hander Vinnie Chulk and optioned reliever Mike McClendon to Triple-A Nashville, the team announced after its 7-3 loss to St. Louis on Saturday.
The move is to bolster a bullpen that's been used extensively the past week. McClendon, a right-hander, appeared in three games since being recalled April 20, including three innings on Friday against the Cardinals.
Chulk has a career 4.33 ERA in seven seasons with Toronto, San Francisco and Cleveland, where he last pitched in the majors in 2009.
The team announced that left-hander Chris Narveson will officially be placed on the 60-day disabled list. He is scheduled to have season-ending surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on Tuesday. Narveson started twice this season.

He's tried 10 times in his career in the regular season. But for some strange reason, Yovani Gallardo has only managed to beat the Brewers' division rival St. Louis Cardinals one time.
And similar to some of his previous starts against St. Louis, Friday night was a quick and painful contest for Gallardo at Busch Stadium.

Fourty-eight straight times -- good for the fourth-longest such streak of all-time -- Brewers closer John Axford has come out of the bullpen in a save situation and left with yet another save on the stat sheet.
And after Sunday's near-disaster finish, Axford won't soon forget the 48th one.
With the Brewers leading 3-2 heading into the ninth inning, Axford came to the hill...
San Diego Padres hitters haven't given much support to their improved pitching staff and rookie right-hander Joe Wieland has especially had trouble getting help from his teammates.
Wieland will try again for his first major league victory when the Padres open a three-game series against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

Zack Greinke worked six strong innings and Jonathan Lucroy's two-run double capped a three-run sixth as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

STATS WriterA matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers provided the St. Louis Cardinals just what they needed to break out of a slump. Judging by how he's pitched so far this season, Kyle Lohse might not require too much support during Saturday's game at Busch Stadium. St. Louis hit .211 with 21 runs scored during a 3-4 stretch before returning home Friday to...
Well, I'd be lying if I said that #WeLoveAx wasn't the worldwide phenomena that I expected it to be. I mean, you would think saying something nice about one of the best players on your favorite baseball team in a 140 characters or less would be a no-brainer, but apparently not. If there is one thing I've learned in life it's that I do not look good in a thong some...

Wolf had his first quality start of the year last time out, though facing the Astros probably helped. It worked out nicely that Wolf, a fly-ball pitcher who sometimes struggles with the home run, was able to start at spacious Petco Park.He will be facing Joe Wieland, a rookie right-hander thirteen...
