The Brewers, bracing for the possible loss of free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder, have reached agreement on a three-year contract with free-agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez, according to major-league sources.
The deal, which is pending a physical, is expected to be in the range of $34 million to $37 million, sources said. Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago was the first to report the agreement.
The Brewers also are awaiting word on a possible 50-game suspension for left fielder Ryan Braun for a violation of baseball's steroid policy. But they had been pursuing offensive help even before receiving the news on Braun.
The team recently made an offer to free-agent shortstop Jimmy Rollins, but ended up signing shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one-year contract with a vesting option.
The Rangers, Mariners and Cubs are among the teams interested in Fielder, who now seems virtually certain to leave Milwaukee.
