The way Aramis Ramirez has been hitting the ball, how sore could his left wrist be?

That question no doubt was being asked by Milwaukee Brewers fans after manager Ron Roenicke revealed Friday that the veteran third baseman would not be in the lineup in the series opener in St. Louis after receiving a cortisone injection in his wrist Thursday.

"I was playing like that, but it was getting worse and worse," Ramirez told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "So we're just trying to take care of it now and hopefully stay healthy for the rest of the season."

Ramirez, who also sat out Sunday's game against Washington, had an MRI performed on the wrist Wednesday evening after the Brewers' 13-4 victory over Houston, and the decision was made to give him the injection on the team's off day.

"What it comes down to is he's been fighting this thing for a while, and it doesn't look like it's going to go away," said manager Ron Roenicke. "I tried to give him a day off, but that doesn't seem to completely get rid of it.

"So they felt pretty comfortable with doing this, and hopefully he won't have to deal with it for the rest of the year."

Despite the ailing wrist, Ramirez was 12 for 25 on the Brewers' last homestand with two homers and eight RBI, boosting his overall average to a season-high .291 with 13 HRs and 67 RBI.

Whether Ramirez is ready to play Saturday remains to be seen.

"He's really swinging the bat well," said Roenicke. "But I kind of like doing it (having him take a day off) because I don't want him to fight this thing for the rest of the year. He s swinging the bat so well, I'd hate to take the chance of maybe losing him."
