Just when Milwaukee's road trip couldn't seem to get any longer, shortstop Alex Gonzalez slid into second base, turning his knee awkwardly Saturday in San Francisco. He rolled over, writhing in pain at the base and the Brewers promptly put Gonzalez on the 15-day DL. On Monday, the Brewers announced that Gonzalez's injury was much more serious than that. According to a tweet from the Brewers, Gonzalez's MRI confirmed that he had torn his ACL in his right knee the second torn ACL for a Brewer in just one week (first baseman Mat Gamel is the other). He'll have one week of treatment before surgery is considered, the Brewers said, but the prognosis isn't good for a team that was ravaged by injuries since leaving Milwaukee for a nine-game road trip at the end of April. Now, Gonzalez, Gamel, pitchers Chris Narveson and Brandon Kintzler, and center fielder Carlos Gomez are all on the disabled list. Gonzalez was batting .259 with four homers and 15 RBI in 24 games as the Brewers' shortstop this season. Follow Ryan Kartje on Twitter.

Brewers SS Gonzalez out for year with knee injury

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke says shortstop Alex Gonzalez will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season. Gonzalez was injured Saturday, sliding into second base during the Brewers' 5-2 loss at San Francisco. Signed to a one-year deal before the season with the hopes of shoring up the Brewers' defense...

Brewers Lose Gonzalez to Injured Knee

The Milwaukee Brewers have not met their lofty expectations thus far in 2012, and a recent spat of injuries could make that an even more arduous task. Left-hander Chris Narveson was lost to season-ending shoulder surgery a couple of weeks back. First baseman Mat Gamel tore his ACL and is likely to be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Center fielder Carlos Gomez just hit...

Brewers extend contracts of Melvin, Roenicke

MILWAUKEE After an unprecedented year of success for the Brewers in 2011, with Milwaukee winning the NL Central and coming just short of a World Series appearance, the organization announced Tuesday that it has extended the contracts of current general manager Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke. Melvin's extension also includes a promotion, officially naming him the Brewers...

Melvin can maintain as well as rebuild

MILWAUKEE When Brewers general manager Doug Melvin took over in late September 2002, after another disappointing season in Milwaukee, the city had meager expectations for its baseball team. A decade straight of losing seasons will do that. So when Melvin set out to rebuild the Brewers, he started with a seemingly simple goal in winning back the city of Milwaukee. "When...

Winning is best cure for Brewers' injury blues

MILWAUKEE A few hours before Monday's game against Cincinnati, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke took his usual, pre-game stroll through the team's clubhouse. This time though, he was surveying a team that had changed quite drastically since its last game at Miller Park. Only pitchers Chris Narveson and Brandon Kintzler were injured the last time Milwaukee had laced up in its...

Lucroy provides happy contrast to dismal trip

There hasn't been much good news out of the Brewers camp since the team left for a nine-game, 10-day road trip at the end of April. The road trip resulted in four players injured in four consecutive days and twice as many losses as wins. But amid the recent disappointment has been one very quiet, very impressive breakout success of the season's first month. He's been...

What Will Gonzalez's Injury Cost The Brewers?

Photo: Jeff Chiu/APThe Brewers learned yesterday that Alex Gonzalez has a torn ACL, meaning they have lost three regulars (totaling somewhere around five wins) for the rest of the season. In a year that has been almost nothing but bad news, this may be the worst break yet. The Brewers have already lost Chris Narveson and Mat Gamel, but they will likely be able to recoup most of their...

Despite Brewers' injuries, Roenicke says, 'We're still good'

It would be easy for the Milwaukee Brewers to collectively say "woe is us," especially after a nine-game trip in which three players went on the disabled list, including two with severe knee injuries that likely will end their seasons. First baseman Mat Gamel and shortstop Alex Gonzalez both were lost with freak yet major knee injuries, only five days apart. Outfielder...

10 Reasons You Should Stop Worrying About the Brewers

There is a good chance the Milwaukee Brewers 2012 season is cursed. I mean, what other possible explanation is there for all of the injuries they have suffered lately? Was Miller Park built on an Indian burial ground and the lost souls are having their revenge? Did Ron Roenicke date a witch? Or maybe the Brewers left a crappy tip for their waitress at Buffalo Wild Wings and now the...

Gonzalez latest Brewer to DL after leg injury

The Milwaukee Brewers' tough week for injuries continues to get worse. In the top of the second inning against San Francisco on Saturday, shortstop Alex Gonzalez left the game after he slid into second base, turning his right knee on the base while stealing. Gonzalez was called safe on the steal but jammed his foot into the base on a late slide. He immediately spun flat on...

Reds begin series with injury-plagued Brewers

Like the Cincinnati Reds in 2011, the Milwaukee Brewers are having some difficulty in the early stages of their NL Central title defense. The injury-plagued Brewers will try to get headed in the right direction during their first matchup with the Reds this season, a three-game series that opens Monday night at Miller Park. Milwaukee claimed its first division title since 1982 last...

The Brewers & The Rest of the Walking Wounded

It has been a crazy week for injuries. The Great Mambino is back for their weekly installment of fantasy knowledge. Here's an excerpt from thier work:What's happening in the water in major metropolitan cities across the US?
