Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz is not expected to start Tuesday, and there's no timetable for when the unbeaten right-hander might be ready to return from a strained neck. Buchholz (9-0) did not throw a bullpen session Saturday, although he did do some flat-ground work. He's been on the disabled list since June 9. "It's likely that at some point we're probably going to have to get him out on a rehab assignment -- at least one start for now," manager John Farrell said. "But there's no timeframe for that. We've got to get him on the mound first and then build from there." The team had hoped Buchholz might be able to pitch Tuesday, but now Ryan Dempster is scheduled to make that start against Colorado. "It's just not quite to the point where I can get on the mound right now," Buchholz said. "I'm still trying to feel it out, I guess. It's taking a bit longer than I want it to." Boston recalled right-h...

Clay Buchholz Is On Track For Tuesday Start

(Jesse Costa/WBUR Radio)Reading 'between the lines' of the 'tea leaves', it appears that Red Sox ace Clay Buchholz will be able to make his next start on Tuesday night at home against the Colorado Rockies. Barring any unforeseen problems between now and then, the 9-0 righty will look to maintain his major-league leading 1.71 ERA in that inter-league tilt. Yesterday...

Dr. Andrews to examine Buchholz

Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz is planning to see Dr. James Andrews for a lingering neck strain that's had him on the disabled list since early June. Manager John Farrell made the announcement before Sunday night's game against the New York Yankees. He said the 28-year old Buchholz was expected to be on the field throwing when the team took batting practice, but he was...

Your Boston Red Sox Are No Closer To A Closer

Papa 'Not-So' GrandeThere's still no word on exactly who will close out games for the Boston Red Sox. All we do know is that it won't be Andrew Bailey. Junichi Tazawa is the likely first choice to migrate to the end of the bullpen—but Andrew Miller and Koji Uehara are also possibilities. Even Rubby De La Rosa has the stuff to do the job. An intriguing new possibility...

This Just In: Red Sox Name Uehara Team's Closer

The Red Sox announced today that Koji Uehara will replace Andrew Bailey as the teams closer. This news comes on the heels of another tough 9th inning for Bailey last night against the Detroit Tigers in which Bailey blew his 4th save of the year. Unlike April and May, the month of June has not been kind to Bailey. So far this month he’s given up at least a run in 4 of 8 9th inning...

Andrew Bailey Remains Confident, Expects to Regain Red Sox’ Closer Job This Season

Andrew Bailey is no longer the Red Sox’ closer. He doesn’t think that will be the case very long, though. Bailey, who has been relieved of Boston’s ninth-inning duties after blowing another save on Thursday, said before Friday’s game that he expects to regain the closer’s role at some point this season. “One bad week doesn’t necessarily make a bad year,” Bailey told...

Andrew Bailey to Get More Opportunities to Close for Red Sox After Blowing Ninth Inning Lead (Video)

Andrew Bailey has had a rough go of it recently. The Red Sox closer has blown four saves in 24 games (three in his last five chances), the most recent being giving up a one-run lead in the ninth inning Thursday against the Tigers. Manager John Farrell said on Wednesday that Bailey was “definitely our closer.” It seems those feelings have changed, though, as Farrell said after...

Routine fly ball ends up costing Red Sox game

Daniel Nava was burned by a controversial call late in the Detroit Tigers’ 7-5 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. The two teams were tied at four in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Detroit’s Avisail Garcia lifted a flyball to the warning track in right. Nava drifted back, then appeared to make a basket catch, before dropping the ball as he readied to throw it back into...

Jose Iglesias Gets Start In Place of Will Middlebrooks, Jon Lester Looks to Get Back in Win Column

Through mid-May, Jon Lester was one of best pitchers in the majors. More than a month later, he is getting desperate for a win. The lefty started off 6-0 with a 2.72 ERA, but is 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA in his previous six starts. Lester will look to end his dry spell and earn his first career win against the Detroit Tigers on Friday. In his five career starts against the Tigers, he...

Red Sox' Franklin Morales leaves Saturday's start, DL trip looming

The Boston Red Sox may have to place pitcher Franklin Morales on the disabled list after he departed early from Saturday's loss to the Detroit Tigers. Evan Drellich of MassLive.com said that although manager John Farrell cited a shoulder problem as the cause, Morales himself said it was the left pectoral, an area he has already had issues with this season. Either way, a DL...

Boston Red Sox: Who’s the right man for the 9th inning?

Andrew Bailey. They say to never go to bed angry. I believe you should never write angry either, which is why I have waited a full 24 hours before discussing the Boston Red Sox’ closer situation. Thursday night, Andrew Bailey entered a 3-2 contest against a tough Detroit Tigers team in hopes of putting his [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links...

BREAKING NOW: Red Sox tab Koji to close

The Guru Contributing Writer Let the high fives begin. The Red Sox wasted no time in giving Andrew Bailey the boot after he blew another save last night. Manager John Farrell will hand the ball in the ninth inning to Koji Uehara. For now. Uehara has a 2.17 ERA in 29 appearances this year. Koji has been effective against both righties (.229 average) and lefties (.140 average...

Four Real? Red Sox vs Tigers 6-23-13

Game 78: Poor Defense + bad bullpen = loss Boston just can't get it done right now. With closer Andrew Bailey blowing game one of the series, and poor pitching throughout the four games with Detroit, Boston has a lot of pitching planning to do if they want to stay at the top of the AL East. Boston lead in this afternoon's game until the seventh, and then things got out of...

Red Sox 10, Tigers 6

Shane Victorino homered and hit three singles, driving in five runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 10-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer for Detroit, which nearly rallied from a 6-1 deficit but couldn't come through against the Boston bullpen. Jon Lester (7-4) allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings, but he won for the...

Red Sox-Tigers Live: Jon Lester Goes Up Against Potent Tigers Offense While Trying to Overcome Struggles

1:40 p.m.: One thing that’s worth noting is that Andrew Miller was actually warming up in the Red Sox’ bullpen while Andrew Bailey gave up the walk-off home run on Thursday. That shows that John Farrell wanted to have another arm ready in case Bailey struggled, but could it also mean that Miller will handle the ninth-inning duties on Friday should the opportunity arise? I took...

Recap: Sox can't hold on lead, drop series

That was awful...again. The Sox traded early punches with the Tigers, then came out with a 4-3 lead in the 4th that lasted into the 7th. The Tigers tied it in the 7th, added 3 in the 8th, and Boston's 1 run in the 9th wasn't nearly enough, ending the final game at 7-5. The Sox looked terrible in the series. Blowing saves, leads, leaving men on base. It was especially frustrating...
