The Pirates made two minor trades on Wednesday, acquiring Vin Mazzaro, Clint Robinson, and Zach Stewart from the Royals and Red Sox. The Bucs sent minor leaguers Luis Rico and Luis Santos to Kansas City for Mazzaro and Robinson, and they will send Boston a player to be named later in exchange for Stewart. Mazzaro, Robinson, and Stewart were added to the 40-man roster, and to clear space Matt Hague and Yamaico Navarro were designated for assignment. The roster is now full, but there are obviously plenty of other expendable pieces the Bucs won’t hesitate to cut loose if they make more moves in the near future. Of course, there was all kinds of mutiny and laughter on Twitter after these trades were made this morning.  They’re little depth moves, people…please don’t mistake them for legitimate trades that the Pirates are expecting to be earth-shattering and offseason defining: Pirates replace marginally useless players with other marginally useless players, everybody freak out — Brian McElhinny (@rtjr) November 28, 2012 Regardless, quick profiles of the three new Bucs: Mazzaro is a 26-year-old right handed pitcher. If you start to google his name, the first suggestion that comes up is “vin mazzaro 14 runs.” That’s because he allowed 14 runs in 2.1 innings in a game last year, becoming the first pitcher to ever allow 14 runs in less than three innings. Cool! His overall numbers covering parts of four big league seasons aren’t very good but Neal Huntington seems to think he might be a useful long reliever, citing his “versatility.” Robinson is a 27-year old first baseman. He had very strong seasons in 2010 and 2011 but fell off a bit in 2012…all in the minor leagues though. The fact that the Royals never really gave him a chance in the bigs despite his age is probably telling…but who knows, Huntington is probably looking to catch lightning in a bottle again here just as he did with Garrett Jones a few years ago. Stewart is a 26 year old right handed pitcher. His major league numbers are dreadful, and he’s been fairly mediocre in the minors. He looks like AAA rotation depth.
