Yippee! Doug Slaten! Slaten is a 31 year-old lefty reliever. He was decent in limited action with the Nats over the last two years, but missed some time with an elbow injury.  He should add a little bit of lefty depth in the bullpen – the Bucs don’t have much of it right now behind Tony Watson, Daniel Moskos, and possibly J0-Jo Reyes.  It’s a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, and Slaten turned down offers from the Brewers and Rangers…so that’s cool. Slaten probably won’t be on the Opening Day roster, but there’s a decent chance he’ll big league action at some point this season. ©2012 Raise the Jolly Roger. All Rights Reserved..

What does Brad Lincoln bring to the table for 2012?

If the 2012 season was starting tomorrow, the Pirates rotation would likely feature James McDonald, Erik Bedard, Charlie Morton, Jeff Karstens, and Kevin Correia in some order. That's an interesting because of the talent that exists in the first three spots, but it's also a paper-thin one. Charlie Morton already has an injury that could cut into the early part of the season...

Pirates’ players and friends in winter league action on Thursday: DOMINICAN LEAGUE Gigantes del Cibao  6,  Aguilas Cibaenas  4 A 4-run 5th inning made the difference for Los Gigantes.  Both teams scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning — Los Gigantes with a walk, three singles, and a ground out double play; and Los Aguilas on a solo homer and a walk and two singles.  The...

Digging deeper into Brad Lincoln's 2011

In part one on Wednesday, I talked about how Brad Lincoln was able to get more groundballs in 2011, which went a long ways towards halving his home run rate and making him more effective than he was with the Pirates in 2010. In part two, let's tackle the deeper questions. What made Lincoln more effective last year and is it something that we can count on from him in 2012?First...

Top 50 Prospects: #12 – Jameson Taillon

#12 Jameson Taillon Pittsburgh Pirates DOB: 11/18/1991 Previous Rank: 14 ETA: 2014 The Pirates insist on babying Taillon, who some thought actually was the top player available in the 2010 draft even ahead of Bryce Harper.  Regardless of who was better, what is certain is that Taillon was the best pitching prospect in his class, so some restraint is probably highly prudent and highly...

Minor League Depth — Pitching, Part 3 (Lower Levels)

It’s not easy to project how the Pirates will manage their low level pitching staffs. A lot of factors beyond on-field performance come into play when the team is deciding which pitchers to promote, or how to divvy up the finite number of innings that are available. The team looks at health issues and the need to build up stamina, mechanical issues, fastball command, and other...

Correia hopes to lead staff again

Pirates' right-hander Kevin Correia was the best starter in the first half of the season in 2011 and made the All-Star team but struggled after the break before getting hurt. Correia is hoping to bounce back strong after going on the disabled list in August. Correia finished the season with a 12-11 mark and a 4.79 ERA. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Correia recently.
