CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jay Bruce homered and drove in a pair of runs, and Johnny Cueto dominated in his first opening-day start, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday before one of their biggest crowds. Cueto (1-0) anchored the Reds' first opening-day shutout since 1980, when Frank Pastore beat Atlanta's Phil Niekro 9-0. The right-hander allowed only three hits over seven innings, and a depleted bullpen finished it off. Left-hander Mark Buehrle (0-1) gave up Bruce's sacrifice fly and Ryan Ludwick's RBI double over six innings. Bruce also homered off Edward Mujica. The crowd of 42,956 was the second-largest at Great American Ball Park, trailing only a playoff loss to Philadelphia in 2010. The Marlins arrived at 3 a.m. after opening their new ballpark in Miami with a 4-1 loss to St. Louis on Wednesday night. They managed only four hits off the defending World Series champions, and weren't any better after a few hours of sle...

First #ATOBTTR of the Year

Johnny Cueto pitched 7 innings of 3 hit baseball as the Reds won 4-0 on Opening Day in Cincinnati. For those of you reading this post you may be wondering what the heck #ATOBTTR means. It’s my lame attempt to get “And This One Belongs to the Reds” trending on Twitter. Whether it trends or not isn’t entirely the point but it’s nice to hear those great words from Marty again...

Reds shut out the Marlins on Opening Day

First pitch photo courtesy of RR Master Photographer Will Hicks Opening Day finally came and the first game is in the books. Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto led the Reds into battle against left-hander Mark Buerhle and the new-look, new-name Miami Marlins. It all started with a 90-mph fastball, called strike from Cueto to Jose Reyes. It ended on a 76-mph curveball from Sean Marshall...

Bats Silent Again

The Miami Marlins struggled offensively again on Thursday as they fell to the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 at Great American Ballpark.    Combined with Wednesday’s opening game, the Marlins have now managed a total of one run on seven hits this season.    Miami produced the least amount of runs in the Spring and it appears that offense has carried over into the regular season thus...

Game 1: Marlins 0, Reds 4

“Game 1.” Boy, that feels good to type. And even better, that game felt good to watch. The Reds took a cue from the Cardinals yesterday and started the season by beating up on Miami to the tune of a quick 0-4 win. Johnny Cueto shut out the Marlins through seven innings of 3 hit work. He also walked … [visit site to read more]

Chicago White Sox: Approaching opening day

The day is almost here. On April 6th, the Chicago White Sox tee off against the Texas Rangers and fans can finally put the woes of the 2011 season behind them. Even though former manager Ozzie Guillen and beloved ace Mark Buehrle are now basking in the sun of Miami, there is much to to be hopeful about. We can expect to see Robin Ventura’s youthful energy in the clubhouse and possibly...

Marlins try for season's first win against Reds

The Cincinnati Reds had to give up plenty to acquire Mat Latos in the offseason, but general manager Walt Jocketty was certain that having Johnny Cueto and the young right-hander at the top of the rotation would make a significant impact. Cueto did on Opening Day, and now it's Latos' turn. Latos makes his Reds debut Saturday night at Great American Ball Bark, where he&...

Cincinnati Opening Day 2012: The Perfect Opening Day

[Box Score] MLB.com Highlights | Cincinnati.com From Jay Bruce’s bomb off Edward Mujica to dead center field to Johnny Cueto shutting down the Marlins offense all day long, to the pregame beers and the post-game euphoria; this was probably my favorite Opening Day in Cincinnati to date.
