New York Yankees
Not much went right after the fifth inning for the Reds,
as Chapman and Ondrusek gave up their first runs.
The Reds (19-18) and Mets (21-17) got together for an afternoon bout on Thursday, with Cincinnati looking to sweep the brief two-game series. The big righty Mat Latos went against the knuckleballer R.A. Dickey on Weather Education day at Citi Field in New York. The Redlegs broke it open with a three-run fifth inning which gave them a 4-0 lead, before the Metropolitans rallied and ripped a gaping hole in the game to take a 9-4 lead over the next four innings, and that was the final score.
Here's the good, the very, very bad, and the notables:
-The Reds offense looked good early on, banging out four runs on eight hits, before everything went wrong.
-Latos drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, as part of the three-run fifth.
-Joey Votto blasted a knuckleball deep to right field for a solo home run (4) in the fourth. He finished 2-4 on the day.
BEST OF MAXIM
Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is pretty good at baseball. And he's generous enough to share his knowledge (and time) about the game in an upcoming camp for kids. Here's the press release detailing the 3rd annual event:
Don’t miss out—the 2012 Gillette Jay Bruce Baseball ProCamp in partnership with Heinz presented by Fifth Third Bank and CBTS is coming up soon!
NEW YORK - One day, the Reds promise, left-hander Aroldis Chapman will be a starting pitcher. But it cant happen yet, not when two of the teams top setup men remain on the disabled list. And not everyone with the team is certain it should happen it all.
I honestly dont think he can be as effective as a starting pitcher, right-hander Bronson Arroyo, one of the Reds starters, said...
Only three players rank ahead of Votto in the new rankings
If there's one thing we know about life, it's that it never goes exactly according to plan. And the folks that cover fantasy baseball over at ESPN.com know this as well. That is precisely why they recently wadded up their preseason Top 250 list and re-ranked it using what they know now. It's amazing how...
Both accounts are excerpts taken from Redleg Journal, a must-have piece of historical literature for anyone who calls themselves a fan of the Reds:
"May 16, 1902 - The Palace of the Fans is dedicated in ceremonies before a game against New York. The Giants spoiled the day with a 5-3 win, scoring all of their runs in the ninth inning. Also, during the...

Right-hander Mat Latos of the Cincinnati Reds has pitched pretty well in the his last three outings. He's given up a total of four runs, in fact. But he's gone six, five and five innings. In the last two, it's taken him 109 and 100 pitches to get through five. That obviously a problem for the bullpen. Latos was the victim of a blown save in the Thursday's 9-4...
After a disappointing assignment to AAA right before opening day Todd Frazier now finds himself the de facto regular third baseman since Scott Rolen went on the DL. His two home runs led the Reds to a comeback victory in a series opener against the Mets last night.
It looks like the Reds were going to sweep the two-game series against the Mets, but then it all came crashing down. They lose 4-9, bringing their record to 19-18.
The Reds start a series with the 20-18 Yankees tonight at 7:05 p.m. Bronson Arroyo (2-1, 3.25 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Reds and face off against some no name guy… Andy Pettitte or something...
NEW YORK (AP) -- Todd Frazier homered twice, Brandon Phillips hit a tying single off Jon Rauch in the eighth and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-3 Wednesday night.
Pinch-hitter Jay Bruce drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly one out after the Reds put together three straight hits off Rauch (3-2), ending with Phillips' single. Rauch retired Chris Heisey on...

Boston outfielder Daniel Nava and Cincinnati third baseman Mike Costanzo were barely on their parent team’s radar as recently as spring training, yet they are wearing major league uniforms.
Nava is an Independent original, starting his pro career as an undrafted free agent in Chico, CA (Golden League) in ’07, the summer after he finished at Santa Clara. He worked...
A couple days ago Paul Daugherty of Cincinnati.com wrote a piece wondering if Kevin Youkilis would be a good fit for the Cincinnati Reds. He talks about how the Boston Red Sox third baseman is a native of the city could be the grinding power bat that the team needs. Well today John Fay also of Cincinnati.com has a quote from General Manager Walt Jocketty that killed any chance...
Todd Frazier went deep twice yesterday. When asked the other day if Frazier would play, Dusty Baker said, “It could be (Miguel) Cairo. I’ve got an idea what guys’ strengths and weaknesses are… We’ll see. It’s up to Frazier. Okay, who switched out my mint toothpicks with splinters! You know my T-picks kill the skunk breath!” Todd Frazier is a damn fine specimen...
And this Mets fan was an off-duty police officer. The story comes from the NY Daily News:
Officer Eduardo Cornejo had a legit ticket to the Mets’ sad 6-3 drubbing by the Cincinnati Reds, but ballpark management confronted him once they realized he was stretched out in a seat better than the one he had purchased.
“He was in a section he wasn’t supposed to be,” Police Commissioner...
