Buzz On Broad:
On Wednesday night, the Phillies got swept by the New York Mets in the final game of their week long series by a final score of 10-6.
When Cliff Lee came out of the game after 6 innings of work, the Phillies held a 4-2 lead.
The bullpen happened. Again.
Let's spit out some stats for you guys, courtesy of Phils beat writer Todd Zolecki (@ToddZolecki):
@ToddZolecki: The Phillies bullpen has a 7.92 ERA (39 earned runs in 44 1/3 innings) in 17 appearances from April 21 - May 9.
That simply can't happen. When this offense is able to produce on a given night, the pitching staff (outside of the starters) needs to get the job done.
Cliff Lee had some comments on his team's performance:
@ToddZolecki: Cliff Lee: "I feel like we were due for something like that. Something needs to change."
And after the game, Charlie Manuel called an unplanned team meeting. The players all had a positive response from the skipper's post game pep talk. JRoll on the meeting:
@ToddZolecki: Rollins, on meeting: "We don't plan on having any more. That's a good thing." So message received? "Any time you manager talks, you listen."

There was a time when Cliff Lee was just a strange, medicore lefty pitching for the Cleveland Indians. He got sent down to the minors as recently as 2007, then came back up and became one of the best pitchers in game. Steroids? HGH? A renewed sex life? I don’t know what it was, but Cliff Lee can flat out throw the ball. Today he came off the disabled list for the Phillies and was...
The Philadelphia Phillies activated starter Cliff Lee from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday. The 33-year-old lefty is expected to start against the Mets. Lee has been on the disabled list since April 19 with a strained left oblique. He had a 1.96 ERA and 18 strikeouts in his first three starts.
Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies is among the best pitchers in the majors. What west coast hurlers are in that group? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my daily coverage.

Aside from pitching well, Cliff Lee also drove in a run in tonight's loss. (AP)It must be Groundhog Day in Phillies land. We’ve seen this story before (the previous two days, as a matter of fact), but the Phillies were once again beaten by the Mets after watching the bullpen squander an early lead. Tonight, the Mets piled on, embarrassing the Phillies by a score of 10-6,...
Cliff Lee gave up two runs in six innings pitched back from the disabled list.
That is the good news.
Kyle Kendrick was bad.
Jose Contreras was worse.
The Philies lost to the Mets, 10-6.
Freddy Glavis’s go ahead double in the bottom of the sixth helped to put the Phillies up, 4-2.
After the top of the eighth, however, Ike Davis’ three-run homer, well, did the Phils in and gave...

The Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon to a very rich contract in the offseason, but have not been able to proerly use their new closer because the rest of the bullpen has been ineffective.
The Philadelphia Phillies are 14-18 through the first 32 games of this season and they look more like the Phillies of the late ’90s than the team that has been baseball’s best the past couple...
The Phillies entered play Tuesday with an 11-3 record when they scored more than three runs in a game. It's not surprising. With a pitching staff that includes three All-Stars -- Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels -- and two dependable right-handers in Joe Blanton and Vance Worley, they should win more games than they lose when they score at least four runs. But for the...
Good afternoon baseball fans! Tonight the Mets have a rare opportunity to go for a sweep in the city of Philadelphia when they take on the Phillies starting at 7:05 PM. Of course, that’s all assuming that this is the real city of Philadelphia they’re playing in and not just a computer-generated version that only exists in our minds.
Anyway, last night the orange and blue crew...
You may have thought that the Phillies hit rock bottom days ago. It was hard to imagine things getting much worse. And yet, it did get worse. After getting swept in 3 games by the Mets yesterday, I think we can officially say, here it is; rock bottom.
And it is not because they were swept by the Mets that this is rock bottom. It is because of the manner in which they were beaten...
TGR wanted to do a quick look into the minors and check up on some of the up and coming MLBers. With Cliff Lee back for the Phillies, Michael Schwimer heads back to the minors. Click HERE to read more. In 5 games (6.1 IP) Schwimer was 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA, striking out 3 and walking 5. We have not seen the last of him this season.
While Schwimer was flirting the the majors,...
