St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter threw 25 to 30 pitches during a bullpen session Friday.
Carpenter said he felt better than expected after being sidelined by neck pain for more than a week.
The team said Carpenter is deadling with a bulging cervical disk in his neck that can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication.
Carpenter said he will wait to see how he feels Saturday before a decision is made on his next throwing session.
The 2005 National League Cy Young Award winner, who will turn 37 next month, went 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA in 34 starts.
Carpenter was brilliant in the postseason, going 4-0 and helping the Cardinals beat Texas in the World Series.
