The Buntfest is returning!  This time, with a twist: This spring, the Cubs will have their second bunting tournament, with a slight tweak. The front office will compete for a spot in the field of 64, and Theo Epstein was expected to square off against GM Jed Hoyer in their first round match. David DeJesus won the tourney last year. There are a number of other staffers in the new Cubs front office, but it would appear that Theo and Jed are the big players here for that play-in spot. So which guy will have a better shot at making it into the Buntfest bracket?  Let’s take a look at each… Theo Epstein The Cubs President of Baseball Operations is highly intelligent and eloquent, but unfortunately, according to his not-so-official scouting report, he never actually played baseball in high school or college.  We are actually unaware of his true baseball prowess, but we assume that he can bunt about as well as Matt Garza.  Despite having a degree in American Studies from Yale, Theo has a good mind for numbers and can probably calculate angles and trajectories pretty quickly.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he drops a couple of 40-pointers and 100-pointers on the boys in pinstripes. Jed Hoyer Also highly intelligent, the Cubs General Manager did play baseball while at Wesleyan.  In fact, he was a superb pitcher for his college program, and to this day holds the school’s career saves record.  As a reliever he may have shagged a few fly balls in the outfield during batting practice, but how much batting (or bunting) practice Jed actually took part in is a mystery.  However, after graduating he was a baseball coach and one assumes that he had to hit fungos and grounders, as well as drop practice bunts for infield practice.  Like Theo, Jed should be able to bunt about as well as Matt Garza. Verdict Though both men are really dapper and sexy as hell, it’s difficult to imagine them doing much more than playing a relaxing game of catch these days.  Both will be woefully out of practice and the contest for the 64th spot may be closer than previously thought. I’m going to give a slight edge to Jed as the superior athlete and on-field baseball talent, but don’t be surprised if Theo stages a dramatic upset.
