BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Casey McGehee and Matt Hague each homered Friday for the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 3-3 tie with the Tampa Bay Rays. McGehee hit a solo shot in the fourth inning. Hague had a two-run homer in the seventh. Hague, who's competing for the final bench spot on the Pirates' opening-day roster, went 2 for 3. He has 13 hits in his past 31 at-bats and leads the team with five homers this spring. The Pirates used five relievers instead of a starter. Brad Lincoln, who has a chance to make the team as a long reliever, worked two innings and gave up Jose Molina's three-run double. Left-hander Matt Moore, who appears to have won a spot in the Rays' starting rotation, worked six innings and allowed one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Jake Fox among four cut from ML camp

Last night I wrote that I believed Jake Fox should make the club out of Spring Training. Apparently, the Pirates did not agree with me as he was assigned to minor league camp today along with Nick Evans, Eric Fryer, and Ryota Igarashi. The move leaves the Pirates with their two catchers in Rod Barajas and Michael McKenry who will head north with the club. It also means that the final...

Pirates 6, Orioles 6 // Twins 15, Pirates 3

The Pirates split up today. They were destroyed on the road by Minnesota and tied at home with Baltimore. On the mound: Erik Bedard pitched five innings vs. the Orioles and was decent. He allowed 4 runs, all in one inning on two consecutive homers. Other than that he was fine, though he only struck out two and walked two. Kevin Correia was shelled by the Twins. 10 runs in 2.1 innings...

2012 Top 20 Prospects – Pittsburgh Pirates

It’s prospect season again. I’ve had my rankings listed on team pages, but have been horrible about keeping those up to date. As I mentioned on the pages, I’m looking at other rankings when I make mine (along with scouting reports and my own opinion). The Pirates are next. For the top 20, I’ve listed them according to my ranking. I’ve also listed the rankings of other...

Rays CF Upton placed on 15-day DL with balky back

Tampa Bay Rays center fielder B.J. Upton was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back injury. Upton suffered the injury two weeks ago after a violent outfield collision with Desmond Jennings and was still experiencing soreness. The Rays elected to be cautious with Upton and made the subsequent move. "The thing is they want to get it under control and make sure...

Twins 11, Pirates 6

Rough one for the Bucs today… On the mound: It was a terrible, terrible day for James McDonald. He allowed TEN runs and walked SEVEN in just 3.2 innings. Yikes. Jared Hughes pitched a scoreless inning. Daniel McCutchen allowed one run in 2.1 innings. At the plate: McDonald hit a double, so at least he had that going for him. Pedro Alvarez had two hits. TWO! (He also struck out...

Pena, Longoria, Scott homer for Rays vs. Sox

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) -- Carlos Pena, Evan Longoria and Luke Scott homered for the Tampa Bay Rays, but four errors and a shaky relief outing from Wade Davis led to a 7-all tie with the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. The game was called after nine innings. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine left his regulars in Fort Myers and opted to bring minor leaguers and backups to Port Charlotte...

Hanrahan motivated to build off career year

Pirates' closer Joel Hanrahan has continued to show All-Star form, reaching 98 mph on the radar gun at spring training. He thrived as a closer last season earning an All-Star appearance, saving 40 games and posting a 1.83 ERA. Hanrahan hopes 2012 is simply an encore.'s George Von Benko caught up with Hanrahan at spring training.

Pirates trade Ryota Igarashi to the Blue Jays for cash

Too bad. Even though he was pretty bad this spring and destined for Indianapolis, I was holding out hope that he was going to top Masumi Kuwata for the honor of "Best Japanese Pitcher in Pirate History."

2012 Fantasy Baseball Peckin' Order: My top five Starting Pitchers NOT to draft

James Shields (Credits below) As I sit here, preparing for experts league there is no better time to break down the starting pitchers that I am going to be staying away from. Most of these guys will probably stick out like a sore thumb as they are being drafted within the top 20 of available starting pitchers. As previously stated the amount of pitchers on the...

Red Sox Live Blog: Evan Longoria's Home Run Extends Rays Lead to 6-4

End 5th, Rays 6-4: Evan Longoria launched one into orbit, getting a run back for the Rays after they nearly watched their lead evaporate in the top half of the frame. Bowden settled down to retire the next three hitters after Longoria's longball, but the Rays will be happy to head to the sixth with a two-run cushion. Mid 5th, Rays 5-4: The Red Sox were able to cut into the Tampa...
