Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was held out of the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays with a sore back. Manager Jim Leyland said Cabrera, the reigning AL Triple Crown winner who leads the major leagues with a .364 batting average, could be available to pinch hit. Cabrera has 26 homers and a major league-leading 85 RBIs. He has been bothered by back soreness for the past two days, leaving in the ninth inning each game. Thursday marked Detroit's seventh straight game on artificial turf. Also out of the Detroit lineup was second baseman Omar Infante. He was knocked out in the fourth inning Wednesday with a bruised left shin after a hard slide at second base by Toronto's Colby Rasmus. Ramon Santiago started at second for Detroit and Don Kelly was at third.

Verlander’s Decline in Historical Perspective

Justin Verlander was excellent yesterday against Toronto, throwing seven shutout innings en route to the Tigers’ 11-1 demolition of the Blue Jays. He not quite as dominant as the Verlander of 2011 and 2012, but that it a pretty high standard. Actually, the 2013 Verlander has not really measured up to that standard all year. Verlander won both the Cy Young Award winner and Most...

Tigers' Rick Porcello suspended six games

It amounts to missing one start or having a start pushed back, but the Detroit Tigers' will be unable to use Rick Porcello for six days - five now.  Porcello will of course appeal his suspension, meaning he can play until that appeal is heard.  It should't be long, though, before he is serving his suspension. According to George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press, Porcello...

Game 2013.85: Tigers at Indians

Detroit Tigers: 46-38, 1st Place (1.5 ahead of Cleveland). Somehow the Tigers have pulled the Bengal-Bus into Cleveland in first place, and even-up on the road trip, pulling 3 of 4 from the previously-hot Blue Jays despite the lack of Cabrera and Infante in the Independence-Day-in-a-Foreign-Land-Finale. In fact, the bench–OK, let’s have some respect here–The Bench excelled...

Tigers INF Infante leaves with injured left leg

Detroit Tigers second baseman Omar Infante left Wednesday night's game against Toronto in the fourth inning after injuring his left leg in a collision with Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus. Infante fell to the ground in pain after Rasmus slid hard into second to break up a double play on Rajai Davis' grounder to shortstop, striking Infante's shin with his right leg...

Tigers Max Scherzer First to 13-0 Since 1986 in Tigers Victory

Detroit Tigers right-hamder Max Scherzer pitched his way to his 13th victory of the season, improving his record to 13-0 and becoming the first pitcher in 27 years to start the season by winning 13 straight decisions. The last pitcher to do so was Roger Clemens in 1986 when the Boston starter went 14-0 to start the season. Scherzer was strong in his 17th outing of the season, working...

Scouting Report: Detroit Tigers Nick Castellanos

The Detroit Tigers selected Nick Castellanos with the 44th overall pick in the 2010 first-year player draft.  Castellano’s is considered one of the best pure hitting prospects in the minor leagues. Castellanos has improved in terms of plate discipline, hitting variability, and adding pop to his bat with Toledo, as his strikeout rates are slightly down and power numbers are up...

Terribly Awesome Baseball Card of the Day: Jim Leyland

Jim Leyland, 1986 Topps There have been some truly awful baseball uni’s throughout the ages and the mid-80′s Pirates jerseys were among the most putrid. That hat, good lord that hat. Rumor has it that Bill the Butcher’s hat in Gangs of New York was based on this card. At worst, Jim Leyland could have been in extra in the final battle scene (Personal Note: I thought the Pug...

Tigers' Omar Infante will miss game Thursday; Colby Rasmus apologetic

Toronto center fielder Colby Rasmus said he meant no harm with the hard slide into second base that got a piece of the Tigers' Omar Infante. Luckily Rasmus might keep that in mind as it's being reported that Infante isn't expected to play against the Blue Jays on Thursday after leaving the game with a shin contusion. Detroit Tigers' Omar Infante expected to miss...

Tigers' Porcello shuts down Indians

Rick Porcello is somewhat of an afterthought on Detroit's deep and talented pitching staff. On Friday night, he was second to none. Porcello pitched seven sharp innings, Jhonny Peralta and Victor Martinez drove in two runs apiece and the Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians for the sixth consecutive time, winning 7-0 to extend their lead in the AL Central. Porcello (5-6) allowed...

Benches, bullpens empty at Tigers-Blue Jays game

Both benches and both bullpens emptied after Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter took exception to being hit by a high pitch from Blue Jays reliever Todd Redmond in the sixth inning of Wednesday night's game. Hunter took a few steps toward the mound and gestured at Redmond after being hit on the left shoulder with none out and the Tigers leading 6-0. Plate umpire Mike Estabrook...

Game 2013.84: Tigers at Blue Jays

45-38, 1st place again, 0.5 ahead of Cleveland. Happy 4th of July, everyone. Let us pause to appreciate the value of civil society and all that it took to get here. Let us pause to admire America the Beautiful. Let us pause to consider the possibility of America the More Beautiful. Max Scherzer is 13-0. Wow. Question: Would we as easily recognize how out of this world consistent...

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Rick Porcello pitched seven sharp innings, Jhonny Peralta drove in two runs and the Detroit Tigers beat Cleveland for the sixth consecutive time, winning 7-0 on Friday night to extend their lead in the AL Central over the second-place Indians. Video: Miguel Cabrera Hits 26th Home Run in Detroit Tigers’ 7-6 Win

Miguel Cabrera just keeps making life miserable for opposing pitchers. On Tuesday night in Toronto, Cabrera launched a majestic 3-run home run off Chien-Ming Wang, capping the Detroit Tigers’ 6-run second inning. That rally came after Toronto raced out to a 4-0 lead on starter Doug Fister. The Tigers scored a run in the top of the eighth, on a Torii Hunter RBI single, to steal...

Anatomy of a “Dirty” Play

On Wednesday night Colby Rasmus started a bit of a fire in the baseball community by a slide into Second-base.  Rasmus slid to break up a double play and took out Omar Infante.  Watch the play here if you haven’t seen it. So, what do we have in that play? Just a good, hard slide.…
