ATLANTA (AP) -- Freddie Freeman, Dan Uggla and Brian McCann homered, powering Atlanta Braves past the Diamondbacks 6-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep in the matchup of division leaders. Paul Maholm (9-6) gave up two runs and eight hits in 6 23 innings for the Braves, who improved to a big league-best 28-11 at home. Trevor Cahill (3-10) allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 13 innings as the NL West-leading Diamondbacks lost for the fifth time in six games. Cahill is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in eight starts since a May 17 win at Miami. Arizona has gone 22 straight games without a win from its rotation, the longest streak in the majors since San Diego went 25 in row from April 17-May 14, 2009, according to STATS. The first of Paul Goldschmidt's two run-scoring double-play grounders put the D-backs ahead in the first, but Freeman tied the score in the second with an opposite-field homer that bounced off the top of the wall in left-center. Atlanta Braves News: Optimism High Halfway Through Season

The Atlanta Braves have continued to play excellent baseball more often than not in the 2013 season, something that was obvious in the team’s three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks to stretch their lead in the NL East to 6 1/2 games, which is currently the largest division lead in all of baseball. Indeed, this latest series against the D-Backs was as good as it gets, as it...

Why is Justin Upton Struggling?

The difference between a decent hitter and a great hitter is consistency. It's a pretty simple concept that has held true through history, but that has not stopped us all from proclaiming a decent hitter as great during their streaks and pitiful during their slumps. The 2013 version of that player is Justin Upton. Upton started the season as the next big thing, hitting 12 home...

Braves are rolling, but Gonzalez wants more

Manager Fredi Gonzalez is delighted with the Atlanta Braves' 6 1/2-game lead in the NL East. Now Gonzalez wants to see his team put together more winning streaks and farther distance itself from the second-place Washington Nationals. With the Braves beginning a three-game home series on Tuesday against the woeful Miami Marlins, Gonzalez is hoping for vast improvement in Atlanta...

Trevor Cahill will turn it around

Jumping on the Diamondbacks rotation, and Trevor Cahill in particular, to blame for the team’s recent struggles is the popular thing to do right now. And truth be told, it’s perfectly acceptable. There’s a reason a starter hasn’t won in over three weeks. There’s a reason the bullpen is, more often than not, run into the ground by overuse. I’m here to tell you Cahill...

Braves Eighth Inning Explosion Buries Diamondbacks

The Braves finished the first half of the season with a 6.5 game lead Another late inning comeback lifts the Atlanta Braves over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  It was a big 8th inning that sent the Braves to an 11-5 victory on Saturday afternoon. Game 2 of this 3 game series was nothing more than a back and forth affair.  The Braves would take the lead; the D-Backs would answer. ...

Braves cap alumni weekend with sweep, welcome Marlins

Hudson continued to struggle in his Saturday start at Turner Field. He walked away with a no-decision. With alumni weekend closing and the remnants of the number retirement ceremony for Chipper Jones still on the field, the Atlanta Braves finished Sunday with a sweep of the first place Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a brilliant weekend for the offense and for young Julio Teheran. However...

Rotation takes another hit as Cahill goes on DL

One day after the worst statistical month of his career came to an end, Diamondbacks starting pitcher Trevor Cahill was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip contusion. The injury is the same one that knocked him out of a June 19 game against the Marlins after one inning. Cahill took a line drive off his hip at the end of the first inning and warmed up for the second...

Big inning dooms Diamondbacks

Up and down, up and down. The season continues to roll on. Saturday’s game was a bit of a microcosm of the Diamondbacks season in many respects. Poor starting pitching, some clutch hitting, a bullpen letdown. All that was missing was a furious comeback as the Diamondbacks fell hard to Atlanta, 11-5.
