Yesterday, I mentioned a report by Jon Heyman, of the Dodgers being interested in Shane Victorino. This rumor was quickly debunked by Dylan Hernandez, so I don't think there is much to worry about here. Obviously it makes sense for the Dodgers to take a look at every opportunity that could help the team. I have already said multiple times, an outfielder could definitely make sense for the Dodgers, but only if they are able to execute, and upgrade properly. If it was me, it still makes a lot more sense to go after a guy like Edwin Encarnacion. That's just me.

The only Phillie the Dodgers should consider right now is Cole Hamels. Period. This guy already bleeds Dodger blue, so this is a marriage made in heaven. ESPN posted a story earlier this evening, that Hamels is open to being traded this summer. Hamels, 28, is in the last year of his contract with the Phillies, and is almost certain to hit the open market as a free agent this winter.

Hamels has said that he would explore free agency if he did not finish the 2012 season with the Phillies.

"Not everybody gets to experience free agency and if you have an option to do it, why not do it?" Hamels told ESPN. "Because if you do it, okay, you got to see what sort of hoopla is surrounding it and then you can always go back to the team that you originally wanted to be with to begin with. So, I don't think it's anything that's too harsh."

Hamels, who is from San Diego, also said playing for the Dodgers would hold a special appeal. Well I don't know about you, but the writing is already on the wall, and I will be shocked if Hamels doesn't get his big payday from the Dodgers this winter, if not sooner.

"I think it's appealing to every player when they're growing up that, one day, hoping they can play in the major leagues, it's always to play for your home team, Hamels said. Even though the Padres were obviously the home team I grew up with, the Dodgers were kind of there neck and neck, so I think that's the closest home team I would ever get to."

This guy is ready to sign on the dotted line. Magic, Kasten, Colletti, is anyone listening?

Danny Knobler recently mentioned that the Phillies have identified about four teams that would be a fit for Cole Hamels and they’re saying they'd want players who are close to contributing in the majors. Buster Olney recently tweeted that the Phillies are looking for third base and outfield help in any trade for Hamels. Juan Uribe is a third baseman, he could be the Phillies third baseman of the future right? The Dodgers do have Jerry Sands and Scott Van Slyke as probable trade bait, but the Dodgers are going to have trouble if the Phillies are looking for position players in return.

Olney also has said that the current asking price is a package of four or five prospects to get Hamels in a new uniform. However, the reality is, that's a tough bargain considering teams can't offer arbitration to impending free agent acquired via trade. My thinking is this, if the Dodgers are willing to pick up all of the remaining money owed to Hamels, while also throwing in three or four prospects, that should be enough to get a deal done. Maybe we can throw the Phillies Uribe as a nice little bonus? You like? Can't we just DFA this guy already?

In all seriousness, I'm thinking it's gonna take a package of something like, Alex Castellanos, Nate Eovaldi, Scott Van Slyke, and Garrett Gould, assuming of course the Dodgers pay all remaining money owed to Hamels. Pretty big price to pay, but I would pay it, especially if the Dodgers can get the preliminary work done on an extension right away. Hamels’ contract expires after the season and he is definitely going to command at least five years with an annual average salary of close to $24MM per season on the open market.

The Phillies won't trade Hamels before trying to sign him to a long-term extension, but so far no progress has been made. Hamels has also made it very clear that he likes it in Philadelphia and he would be open to re-signing with the Phillies this winter. Hamels understands the position the team is in, it's just business, and it's just the way it goes. Okay, I love this guy. Can we just make this trade happen already? I would love to see Hamels in Dodger blue for the next five years. How about you?
