We're inching closer to real baseball, and today the Cardinals announced that Adam Wainwright will be the Opening Day starter.
This surprises no one.
But there are still some big issues to resolve before the Cardinals start the season. So let's break down where we're at headed into the last 2 weeks of spring.
Oscar. Will he make the team? Looks like this is a no. He's been getting some PT still, but his average has tailed off the past week as better pitchers go deeper into games. He should be fine for the long-haul since he's a guy that kills pitching that's close to the plate, but the Cardinals don't want to start the clock on his MLB service time unless they have to. They don't have to. 15% he opens his MLB career in April 2013.
Shelby or Kelly. Who's the 5th starter? Miller might have to be spectacular to win the job at this point. Kelly out performed him this week in the game the press has hyped as a 'showdown'. Miller...

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that ace starter Adam Wainwright would make the opening day start when the team kicks off the 2013 season on the road at Arizona on April 1. Wainwright certainly deserves the opening day start, but will the Cardinals also reward Wainwright with a contract offer before then?
As was discussed on Friday night's episode of The Cruddy...
Let me preface this by saying that I really respect Peter Gammons. He is one of the best reporters in the game. However a tweet from him this morning had me scratching my head.
Here is the tweet from Gammons at 11:23 AM this morning:
"Cards are asking about a SS as well as P. Interested in Lucas Harrell and Bud Norris of Astros."
The Cardinals currently have Joe...
In their final outing before the Cardinals make their decision on the 5th starter spot, Joe Kelly out pitched Shelby Miller and looks to have locked up the spot.
Kelly started the game and pitched 4 innings allowing just 3 hits and, more importantly, no walks. He gave up 1 earned run while also striking out one. His sinker was in good form as he induced 6 groundouts to just...
I have been writing a series of posts that seem to take issues with how projection
systems predict certain players over the course of the 2013 season. It may seem like I
have an issue with projection systems. The fact is that I do not. When you put all of
their projections together, the margin for error is quite small. All of them pretty much
work the same way. You plug in the...
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Adam Wainwright has no idea who the fan was that gave him that picture last week. He'd sure like to tell them thank you.
Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday, his second consecutive impressive start since a fan helped him fix a mechanical flaw....
JUPITER, Fla. Shelby Miller knows what will happen if best friend Joe Kelly is tabbed as the Cardinals fifth starter over him.
"If he gets the fifth spot, I'm not going to talk to him anymore," Miller quipped.
Jokes aside, the roommates find themselves as the two remaining competitors to be the fifth starter in the Cardinals' rotation.
The situation could be...
The fight for the fifth spot in the St. Louis Cardinals' starting rotation has been one of the most followed stories throughout spring training. Manager Mike Matheny has held an open competition for the spot throughout spring camp and there are just two contestants remaining after Trevor Rosenthal's move to the bullpen last week and Michael Wacha's assignment to Memphis...
Adam Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings and Matt Adams hit a three-run homer in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday.
Facing mostly Washington backups, Wainwright took a shutout into the sixth inning and allowed only three hits in his second consecutive impressive start.
Jon Jay and Adams homered in a four...
With just two weeks until MLB's opening day of the 2013 season, former St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher and current free agent Kyle Lohse is still looking for a home and a place to play this season. As was discussed on a recent episode of The Cruddy Show, there have been plenty of excuses made for why Kyle Lohse has not been signed at this point, most notably, that a team...
The St. Louis Cardinals trimmed their spring camp roster down to 45 after Thursday’s moves.
Spring Training 2013 was not supposed to be an exciting one for the St. Louis Cardinals. A team that had made very few offseason moves was primarily set for the upcoming season. Then, an injury to a veteran starter opened up a door.
Cardinals prospect Michael Wacha
The injury to Chris Carpenter might have opened up a door but the depth within the organization has kicked it...
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Shawn Hill allowed one hit in four innings, and Matt Tuiasosopo hit a long homer to lead the Detroit Tigers over the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 Saturday.
Hill, likely to start the season at Triple-A, struck out thee and walked one. Bruce Rondon, Jose Alvarez and Luke Putkonen finished the four-hitter as the Cardinals were shut out for the third time in six games...
Kyle Lohse went through this as a free agent once before. Five years ago on Thursday, he signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
This time, Lohse is taking even longer to find a new team.
Lohse, 34, is working out both near his home in Arizona and at a facility operated by his agent, Scott Boras – the Boras Sports Training Institute in Aliso...
