Cards’ spotlight is directly on Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny made a very interesting comment on Wednesday. With regard to the three-way battle for the final rotation spot among Joe Kelly, Shelby Miller and Trevor Rosenthal, the skipper said the following, as reported by B.J. Rains: “We’re getting close,” Matheny said of needing to make a decision. “Yeah, we’re getting close.” This was...

Nationals phenom Bryce Harper tries throwing out runner rounding first…from left field

This may be the most Bryce Harper thing ever. Sure it’s only spring training, and the chances that the Nationals phenom would try a throw like this during the regular season is less than 5% (OK, maybe 10%), but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Astros 3rd baseman Brandon Laird almost learned the hard way that if you take a big turn rounding first after a single, Bryce...

The deal comes as a surprise as Craig still had three years of arbitration remaining and the Cardinals paid up to buy two extra seasons of having the 28 year old Craig in a Cardinals' uniform for the next five seasons. Craig will be paid a total...

2013 Season Preview: St. Louis Cardinals

Not only were the St. Louis Cardinals one win away from a second straight World Series appearance, but they also boast one of -- if not the -- best farm systems in baseball. Simply put, it’s good to be the Cards right now, and 2013 figures to be another great year in the Gateway City. In the NL Central, it’s basically Cincinnati, St. Louis, then everyone else. Do they have enough...

In the tournament opener for both teams, Angel Pagan got Puerto Rico started with a leadoff single against Sergio Perez. One out later, Alex Rios was hit by a pitch and Beltran drove in Pagan...

What To Make of Rookie Pitchers

Source: Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images North America Pitching is rather famously hard to predict. Young pitchers, without the benefit of a MLB track-record, are even more so. Let’s look anyway. I like to live dangerously. Casey Kelly (SD) A pitcher with an average fastball and only eight starts above Double-A may seem an odd choice to start this list but all totaled Casey Kelly...
