Kyle Lohse pitched six spotless innings to earn his 12th win and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 on Sunday night for a three-game sweep. Daniel Descalso had a season-high three hits for the Cardinals, who have won five of six and 12 of 16. It was their first three-game sweep at home against the Brewers since March 31 to April 3, 2003. Milwaukee has lost its last nine road games. Lohse (12-2) allowed four hits and threw 100 pitches while winning his sixth consecutive decision. He struck out six, walked three and lowered his ERA to 2.79. Edward Mujica, Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte shut out the Brewers over the final three innings. Motte earned his 24th save in 28 chances. The Cardinals wore 1982 powder blue replica uniforms to mark the 30th anniversary of their World Series win over Milwaukee. Back then, the Brewers were in the American League. St. Louis has won 14 of the last 19 regular-season games between the teams. The Cardinals also beat Milwaukee i...

Lohse continues to quietly impress

ST. LOUIS When asked to name the starting pitcher who led the 2011 World Series Champion Cardinals in both wins and ERA, even some in St. Louis likely wouldn't say the correct answer of Kyle Lohse. But despite having an even better season this year, Lohse seems to be flying under the radar nationally yet again. And that appears to be just fine with him. "I don't really...

Garcia nearing return to Cardinals rotation

ST. LOUIS Cardinals left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia believes he'll make just one more rehab start before being ready to rejoin the big league club. He's also pleased with the progress his left shoulder is making. Garcia, recovering from a left shoulder strain that landed him on the disabled list June 7, went 4 13 innings Saturday night during a rehab start with Double...

Cards salute reunion of '82 World Series crown

ST. LOUIS - When the St. Louis Cardinals acquired shortstop Ozzie Smith prior to the 1982 season, manager Whitey Herzog had a plan to get the defensive wizard to start producing at the plate. For each time Smith hit the ball on the ground, Herzog would give him a dollar. If the shortstop struck out or hit the ball in the air, he had to give his manager a dollar. "I think...

Brewers top prospect Segura called up

After joining the Milwaukee Brewers as the main prospect in a trade that sent pitcher Zack Greinke to the Angels, shortstop Jean Segura will join the Brewers major league roster tonight against Cincinnati, according to a release from the team. In addition to Segura joining the roster, the Brewers announced that shortstop Cesar Izturis was claimed off waivers by Washington. As one...

Wainwright's arm, bat lead Cardinals over Brewers

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Adam Wainwright pitched a five-hitter and also contributed at the plate, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-1 Saturday night. Wainwright (9-10) moved closer to .500 after starting the season at 0-3. He threw 73 of 98 pitches for strikes, walking none and fanning seven. All of Wainwright's strikeouts came during a stretch between the...

Cards take opener of crucial series with Giants

ST. LOUIS -- In a potential playoff preview Monday night at Busch Stadium, the surging St. Louis Cardinals showed people that they can beat the good teams too. The Cardinals entered Monday's series opener against the NL West leading San Francisco Giants with just a 10-21 mark in their last 31 games against teams with a winning record. And with All-Star Matt Cain on the mound...

Segura will get two-month audition with Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers decided not to wait until September to take a look at shortstop prospect Jean Segura. They called him up Monday with the intention of playing him regularly the rest of the season. "I think it's a great opportunity to look at him," said manager Ron Roenicke. "It's important to see for going forward next year and maybe the year after to...

Prime 9: Chillest Brewer Bros

Whenever I'm bored and can't find anything to watch on TV I always switch over to the MLB Network to see what's going on. Most of the time it's just a rerun of the previous night's highlights that gets old in about five minutes, but sometimes they show their original program Prime 9. It's essentially a countdown show that features lots of old footage and talking...

A Sweep? Leads Monday Ramblin's...

A sweep? Are the Cardinals contractually allowed to sweep? I thought that was going to incur some sort of fine on Mike Matheny. Or open up the skies to showers of frogs and newts… Has there ever been a more Olympic story than Oscar Pistorius? Today many people, including myself, are going to be doing a lot less complaining. About everything…That 5 game over .500 mark had a strong...

Rickie Weeks’ Quiet Turnaround

After a tremendous +6.5 win season in 2010, the Milwaukee Brewers signed second baseman Rickie Weeks to a four-year, $38.5M contract extension in February 2011. He followed up his breakout campaign with a +3.7 win season in an injury-shortened 2011, in which he proved 2010 was not a fluke by hitting .269/.350/.468 with 20 home runs and a .358 wOBA. Expectations were sky-high coming...

Marcum To Return Soon?

The Brewers’ rotation hasn’t exactly impressed since Zack Greinke’s departure, but at least some help is on the way. Right-hander Shaun Marcum, who has been out since mid-June with tightness in his elbow, threw a successful simulated game today and will hopefully be ready for a rehab outing sometime later this week. The circumstances surrounding Marcum’s injury were ...

Will Segura Be Forever in Brew Jeans?

The Brewers called up shortstop, Jean Segura. Woohoo! Now, on various teams, I have Domonic Brown, Mike Olt, Straily, Starling Marte, Brett Jackson, Josh Vitters and some serious Short Eyes. I’m basically the creepy guy hanging around the playground in my Astrovan, blasting “Hey Nineteen” wearing candy jewelry like I’m Mr. T. ”Psst! Jean Segura, what kind of speed...

Cardinals Monday minor league pitching moves

Seven minor league pitchers are on the move across the St. Louis Cardinals system.

Q&A with Brewers bullpen coach Lee Tunnell

With a bullpen that had recorded the most losses and blown saves in the major leagues, the Milwaukee Brewers fired bullpen coach Stan Kyles on July 30 and replaced him on an interim basis with minor league pitching coordinator Lee Tunnell. Tunnell, who has been in that role for four seasons, is charged with restoring confidence in a unit that is probably the biggest reason the Brewers...

Nationals acquire INF Izturis from Brewers

The Washington Nationals acquired infielder Cesar Izturis from the Milwaukee Brewers in a waiver wire trade Monday. Izturis, who has seen time at all four infield positions this season, was claimed by the Nationals who needed depth around the infield with shortstop Ian Desmond on the disabled list and Mark DeRosa (groin) day-to-day. Izturis is in the final year of his contract...
