Josh Beckett increased his repertoire of pitches for his second spring training start, and the result was similar to his first outing.
Beckett gave up two hits in three scoreless innings but the Boston Red Sox lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 on Thursday. He has allowed three hits and no runs in five innings this spring.
''I threw everything I wanted to throw,'' said Beckett, who used mostly changeups and one curveball in his first outing. ''It's getting there. It's a work in progress.''
Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia pitched two hitless innings in his first spring start, striking out four.
Garcia did not allow a ball out of infield and started the game by striking out Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia.
''He was nasty,'' Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. ''He just had a great tempo. When he's like that and that ball is kind of running, cutting, sinking all over the place it's just no fun. You can jus...

JUPITER, Fla. –– Jose Iglesias scurried all around the infield. In the second inning, the Red Sox shortstop started by making a sliding stop on David Freese’s grounder and firing a bullet to first base for the out. On the ensuing at-bat, Cardinals designated hitter Matt Adams hit a sharp grounder to second base. As the ball rolled, Iglesias bolted in front of Dustin Pedroia...

Fenway Park has been a sacntuary for Boston sports fans for nearly a century, containing more history between its big green walls than almost any arena, building or park throughout the country. And on Wednesday, Fenway was recognized for that unique and timeless history. Entering its 100th season as the official home of the Red Sox, Fenway Park has finally been added to the National...
Closer Andrew Bailey has to pitch this spring because of a strained lat muscle but that will come to an end hopefully on Friday when he is scheduled to pitch batting practice. Bailey also has a tentative inning on Monday against the Marlins. Closers typically need much less time to get ready for the season given that they only pitch (usually) one inning at a time. I'm interested...
Don’t get me wrong. I like Matt Adams as a player. In fact, he is The Cardinal Nation’s ninth-ranked prospect in 2012.
On the other hand, the 22-year-old is not going to continue to produce as he has over the first four games of spring. Sure, let’s give him credit for the grand slam against the Mets and the bases-clearing triple to help sink the Red Sox on Thursday. On the...
JUPITER, Fla. - Soaking up advice, suggestions and tips has been a goal for Adron Chambers this spring. Even if it's about how to wear his uniform.
Hoping to make the Cardinals roster as a reserve outfielder, the 25-year-old Chambers has been trying to pick anyone and everyone's brain that is willing to talk.
And that includes guest instructor and former Cardinals fan favorite...
Free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt recently told teams around the league that he was going to sit out the start of the season. At the time, it appeared he was only looking at the Cardinals and Rangers as potential destinations due to the close proximity to his Mississippi home.
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com notes that Oswalt is now telling teams that he is willing to go anywhere, but still...

JUPITER, Fla. –– Chris Carpenter was the victim of the joke again. As the pitcher walked to the mound at Roger Dean Stadium Thursday, the Cardinals public address announcer introduced him as "the other Chris Carpenter." During the seventh inning of St. Louis' 9-3 win over Boston, he nearly looked the part of St. Louis' former Cy Young Award winner, retiring...
