St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter told the team that he might have season-ending surgery after a setback in coming back from nerve-related shoulder problems.

The team shut down Carpenter's scheduled bullpen session Monday and there is no timetable for another one, a source told the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Carpenter has thoracic outlet syndrome, a rare condition that compresses nerves and blood vessels in a region between the collarbone and rib cage. Carpenter has not pitched this year. He experienced neck pain and a weak shoulder during spring training. After spending the first three months of the season resting and exercising his right shoulder to build back strength, weakness returned after throwing batting practice June 22.

Carpenter is in the first year of a two-year, $21 million contract extension. The parties have to decide whether it is best for him to attempt a risky return this season or opt for surgery that could fully heal enough for the 2013 season.
