The last time Chris Carpenter appeared in a big league game, he was leading the Cardinals to a Game 7 victory in the World Series on just three days of rest. His teammates can't help but hope for a repeat performance next month. The Cardinals will welcome their ace back to the mound for the first time in 2012 when he makes his season debut Friday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. And they know doing so only increases their chances of repeating last year's magical run. "It's going to be huge," said starter Adam Wainwright. "If he's as healthy as we think he is and he pitches as well as we think he's going to, he's a force to be reckoned with. He makes our team that much better. We've had one of the best rotations in the National League already and you add a guy like that, you make our team very dangerous. "Last year one of the big reasons we won was because he was so incredible the second half of the season and the playoffs...

Carpenter hopes to build off successful debut

CHICAGO -- The end result was a disappointing and deflating 5-4 walk-off loss in 11 innings Friday to the Chicago Cubs. But what happened the first five innings might prove to be more important for the Cardinals down the stretch. The defending World Series champions welcomed back ace Chris Carpenter, who made his first start of the 2012 season after dealing with a nerve issue in...

Chris Carpenter return, difference maker?

It appears that the St. Louis Cardinals might get a proven post-season weapon back in Chris Carpenter, just in time for the stretch run.  He’s scheduled to pitch Friday in Chicago.  If it’s not enough the Cardinals are playing the Astros and Cubs (worst two teams in baseball) for 9 games starting tonight, they could get 2 starts out of him, then have him queued up for the opener...

Chris Carpenter to make 2012 debut Friday at Cubs

Chris Carpenter is set to make his 2012 debut just in time for the St. Louis Cardinals, who could use an ace up their sleeve to boost their pursuit of the second NL wild card. Carpenter was 4-0 in the postseason last fall but hasn't pitched since winning Game 7 of the World Series against Texas. He's back less than two months removed from surgery to relieve a nerve ailment...

Chris Carpenter Solid in Return to the Cardinals

When Chris Carpenter went down with a nerve injury in spring training this year, it was not certain that he would pitch again this season.  When the injury required surgery, it seemed all but impossible for Carpenter to return in 2012.  However, last night Carpenter took the mound at Wrigley field as the St. Louis Cardinals took on the Chicago Cubs.  And he performed...

Epic Fail: Cardinals Broadcast Declares Chris Carpenter Player of the Game but Cubs Win

The St. Louis Cardinals broadcast thought they had the game all locked up.  So, with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Cubs batted, they decided to announce the player of the game.   They chose starter Chris Carpenter, who went five innings and allowed two runs in his return from elbow surgery that kept him out all season.  But, without closer Jason Motte available...

Cubs spoil Carpenter's season debut

It was all going so well for St. Louis. Chris Carpenter had a solid 2012 debut and Pete Kozma swiped home for the go-ahead run, putting the Cardinals in position to extend their timely winning streak. Then it all fell apart in a hurry. Darwin Barney connected for a tying two-run homer off Fernando Salas with two out in the ninth inning and David DeJesus hit a game-ending single...

Pregame: Cloyd on the Mound with NO ROOM for Error.

The Cardinals shook their recent slump and are hot right now. They get Chris Carpenter back tomorrow. It almost seems at this point that if the Phillies win out, they'll fall short. That's the hole that series in Houston helped dig. I credit them for making it interesting. We all burried the team at one point or another. Hell, I had a tweet ready to go with two outs in...
