Found March 30, 2014 on Sports Injury Alert:
As the St. Louis Cardinals look to avenge their 2013 World Series loss to the Boston Red Sox, they will have to begin the season with a short-handed infield as veteran Mark Ellis will start the season on the shelf, according to a tweet from St. Louis beat reporter Derek Goold, Ellis, who during his 11 year tenure in the big leagues has been known as a scrappy, sure-handed and capable infielder, was brought in from the rival Los Angeles Dodgers to provide some veteran presence to the infield.  There is no timetable set for Ellis' return as of now, and in his abscense the team has promoted Pete Kozma to the 25-man roster. Kozma played with regularity for the first time last season, in 143 games he batted .217 with 1 home run and drove in 35. Kozma would not be looking at a chance to start at his natural position of shortstop because of the acquisition of Jhonny Peralta, but could certainly see starting time at second. Neither Ellis or Kozma are known as much of an offensive threat...

Yadier Molina’s health might be even more important to St. Louis Cardinals in 2014

Perennial Gold Glove Award-winning catcher Yadier Molina is the most valuable player on the St. Louis Cardinals for a myriad of reasons, but his biggest value in 2014 might be simply his ability to squat behind home plate nearly every day. Molina obviously provides incredible value to the Cardinals with his superb defense that includes an uncanny ability to throw out baserunners...

St. Louis Cardinals release four more from minor league camp

‘Tis the season. Late Spring Training is a rough time for minor league players. Teams are realizing their depth and also preparing for the start of the minor league season. Teams are also evaluating where players fit in the system, and some players just don’t fit. That is the case for three more minor leaguers in the Cardinals system. Trevor Martin Martin was the Cardinals...

Game 1: Maybe WAR Is That Easy?

Opening Day. Adam Wainwright pitches 7 innings, surrenders 0 runs and the Cardinals win 1-0. The bare minimum amount a baseball team can win by. Yadier Molina hits 1 home run, has 1 RBI and the Cardinals win 1-0. The bare minimum amount a baseball team can win by. One game. One win. Each player not just vital, but directly responsible for their teams success. This is what WAR (wins...

Mason Katz homers, Shelby Miller tunes up on Saturday

Saturday was the last day of competition with another team for the Cardinals’ minor league teams, as Sunday will be a camp day and the players will head north on Monday. Mason Katz had a very impressive day at the plate. I am projecting he will begin the season with the Peoria Chiefs and could be in line for a breakout season. It is looking more like Kenny Peoples-Walls will also...

Wainwright picks up 100th career win with a little help from an old friend

For Yadier Molina to be the star of Adam Wainwright's 100th career win was fitting. After all, Molina was behind the plate nearly seven years ago when Wainwright won his first start, giving up one run over seven innings in a 4-2 victory at Houston. Molina since has caught most of Wainwright's wins -- and losses. The two have developed such a rapport there are times when Molina...

Joe Kelly (SP, STL) – Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Stash in Deeper Leagues ANALYSIS: The St. Louis Cardinals are like any other well-oiled factory – they turn out great product after great product.  The Cardinals’ product just happens to be MLB pitchers.  Joe Kelly won the 5th spot in the rotation over flame thrower Carlos Martinez.  He won this not because he was the [...]

Zach Petrick has a final tune-up and Breyvic Valera keeps hitting on Sunday

Sunday was the last spring day for Cardinals’ minor leaguers. The teams had a couple of intersquad games before traveling north to their opening day assignments. Zach Petrick had a solid tune-up start for Palm Beach, striking out 7 over 5 innings. It is still unclear where he will start the season. I am predicting he will be back with Springfield, but there have been several surprises...

Shout Out To Adams County Iowa

The Wall Street Journal has released a map of the most ‘liked’ MLB teams in each county of the US. LINK HERE No surprise that the Cardinals swath is strong in MO and IL, with multiple counties in AL, AR, OK, TN and KY represented. Even a few IA counties near the top edge of MO are bleeding red. But Adams County? They’re right in the middle of Cubs country. And they’re standing...
