The Baby Birds went 5-2 on Monday with Palm Beach winning both games of a double-header, Peoria, Johnson City, and the GCL Cards also winning. Springfield and State College were on losing ends while Memphis is on its All-Star Break. In the upper minors it was the Chris Carpenter show in Springfield. Carpenter, making his first rehab start, lasted 2 2/3 innings but most will consider it a successful debut in 2013. Carpenter was 93-95 with his fastball and his curve had sharp break. He had very clean first and second innings before running into trouble in the third. Carp’s next start will most likely be on Saturday, and it is unknown where. Palm Beach swept Brevard County in a double-header as Kyle Hald and Ryan Sherriff had outstanding starts. In the lower minors, Corey Jones was excellent again for Peoria and Jordan Walton had his second very solid game earning him player of the game honors for the second straight night. Mason Katz hit his first professional home run and David Washington added his 5th of the year in a losing effort for State College. Blake McKnight was solid for 5 innings in Johnson City’s win. Oscar Taveras returned to game action in a rehab game for the GCL Cards. Taveras batted twice and walked in his first at-bat and doubled in his second.
