The Baby Birds went 5-2 on Monday as Springfield, Peoria, State College, Johnson City, and the GCL Cards all won, while Memphis and Palm Beach were on the losing end. Here are quick game summaries followed by the player of the game and a link to the box score: The Memphis Redbirds lost 7-4 to the Round Rock Express on Monday. Adron Chambers had 2 hits including a triple and his 8th home run, he also drove in 2 runs. Jamie Romak had 3 hits, including a double. Scott McGregor pitched 7 strong innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 8 hits and striking out 4. Eric Fornataro made his return from the DL and allowed a run on 3 hits in the 8th inning. Player of the Game: Adron Chambers Box Score The Springfield Cardinals won 7-3 on Monday against the Tulsa Drillers. Mike O’Neill led the way with 3 hits, 3 runs scored, and an RBI. Xavier Scruggs walked three times and drove in 2 runs. Luis Mateo hit his 5th home run of the year in his return to Class AA from Memphis. Jonathan Cornelius picked up his third win with 6 strong innings. Lee Stoppelman picked up his second save while recording the last two outs of the game . Player of the Game: Mike O’Neill Box Score The Palm Beach Cardinals fell 6-5 on Monday to the Clearwater Threshers. Jonathan Rodriguez hit his 11th home run of the year, a 3-run homer in the 6th. Starlin Rodriguez added 3 hits out of the lead-off spot and David Popkins had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Kyle Hald was remarkable for 8 innings, only allowing 1 run on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4. Dean Kiekhefer couldn’t hold the lead as he allowed 5 earned run in just 2/3 of an inning. Player of the Game: Kyle Hald Box Score  The Peoria Chiefs pounded the Kane County Cougars 14-1 on Monday. Charlie Tilson and Breyvic Valera each had 4 hits and 2 runs scored, Valera also drove in 2. Patrick Wisdom had 3 hits including 2 doubles and he also drove in 3 runs. Gerwuins Velazco hit his first home run of the season and had 3 RBI’s. The Chiefs pounded out 17 hits. Thomas Lee picked up his 4th win of the year in his first start. Lee allowed only 3 hits and 1 run over 5 2/3 innings. Dixon Llorens pitched the last 3 1/3 innings while only allowing 1 hit and striking out 4. Player of the Game: Gerwuins Velazco Box Score The State College Spikes won 2-1 in extra innings on Monday. Luis Perez and Carson Kelly each had 2 hits, including a double, an RBI, and a run scored. The Spikes scored the go ahead run in the 13th inning on a Perez sacrifice fly. Nick Petree started the game and went 3 1/3 innings and only allowed 5 hits, no earned runs, and he struck out 4. Michael Aldrete, Mitch Harris, Jeffrey Rauh, Jacob Booden, and Jhonny Polanco combined for 9 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. All Spikes pitchers struck out 14 batters. Player of the Game: Luis Perez Box Score The Johnson City Cardinals won 2-1 on Monday, beating the Princeton Rays. Vaughn Bryan doubled and scored in 4 plate appearances. Justin Ringo hit his first professional home run in the 8th inning. Ronnierd Garcia picked up the Cardinals’ other RBI. Alex Reyes started for Johnson City and showed why I put him in my top 20 prospects list. Reyes went 7 innings and allowed just 1 run on 6 hits and he struck out 8. He won’t turn 19 until late August. Zach Loraine threw 2 scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 0.86. Player of the Game: Alex Reyes Box Score The GCL Cards beat the Mets 5-2 on Monday in Jupiter. Rafael Medina drove in two runs and Oscar Mercado had a hit, RBI, and run scored. Mercado did record his 8th error of the short season and also has hit safely in 4 straight games. Luis Cruz made his GCL debut and collected 2 hits. 2013 3rd round pick Mike Mayers started and allowed 1 earned run in 3 innings while striking out 4. Marco Gonzales, the Cards top pick this year, relieved Mayers and threw a scoreless 1 2/3 innings while striking out all 5 batters he retired.
