Courtesy Cardinals Media Relations ST. LOUIS, Mo., November 16, 2011 The St. Louis Cardinals and newly-named Manager Mike Matheny today announced the teams coaching staff for the upcoming 2012 season. Returning to their current positions will be Pitching Coach Dave Duncan, Third Base Coach Jose Oquendo, Hitting Coach Mark McGwire and Bullpen Coach Derek Lilliquist. Assistant Hitting Coach Mike Aldrete has been elevated to the Bench Coach position and Memphis (AAA) Manager Chris Maloney has been promoted to the First Base Coaching post. Just like our players, the Cardinals organization places a high-level of expectation on its coaches, said Matheny. I have great admiration for the work these men have done throughout their careers and we will continue to invest in the preparation, coaching and leadership necessary to build upon that success. Once we identified Mike (Matheny) as our new manager, he quickly went to work in assembling a coaching staff that offers a wealth of experience and leadership, but he also looked at areas where we could provide growth opportunities for key members from within the organization, said Cardinals Senior Vice PresidentGeneral Manager John Mozeliak. We are extremely excited about our staff for next season. Duncan, 66, will be entering his 17th season as the Cardinals pitching coach in 2012 and his 33rd overall the most all-time among Major League pitching coaches. Oquendo, 48, will be entering his 13th season as the teams third base coach and his 14th season as a member of the Cardinals Major League coaching staff. Oquendo is a key contributor to the teams infield play. McGwire, 48, has been the Cardinals Hitting Coach each of the past two seasons, this year overseeing the National Leagues top hitting (.273) and run-scoring (762) offense. Lilliquist, 45, joined the Cardinals Major League coaching staff last season and has been part of the organization since 2002. Aldrete, 50, has served as the teams Assistant Hitting Coach since 2008. He was a Major League Hitting Coach for Arizona from 2005-06 and First Base Coach for Seattle in 2004. He managed in the Arizona minor league system in both 2003 (Lancaster-A) and 2002 (Yakima-A). Maloney, 50, has been part of the Cardinals organization for 17 seasons, the last five (2007-11) as the Manager at Triple-A Memphis. His Memphis club won the Pacific Coast League Championship in 2009 and returned to the PCL Championship Series in 2010. He has earned Manager of the Year honors at three different levels (New York-Penn League, South Atlantic League and Texas League). Maloney is the only two-time winner (2006, 2009) of the prestigious George Kissell Award, presented annually by the Cardinals for excellence in player development. Former First Base Coach Dave McKay and Bench Coach Joe Pettini will remain with the organization and assist within the teams Baseball Operations.
