Game # 63 Fri. June 6, 2008
Astros 4 Cardinals 1
Joe Mather said it best when he said that games like Friday are games where you just press delete and move on. Friday night was not the Cardinals night at all. They were held to 4 hits, 2 by Skip Schumaker and 2 by Adam Kennedy. Still there were some positves from the loss. Mitchell Boggs made his much anticipated Major League debut, giving up 1 run in 2 innings of work. Here is my analysis of the game:
Performance of the Game: Skip Schumaker
What Went Wrong:
1. The offense - It was non existent besides "Schu" and Kennedy. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat, and the Astros pitching was very good last night. Let's hope it isn't as good against Wainwright on Saturday night.
2. Braden Looper - He technically had a quality start with just 2 earned runs (5 total runs) in 6 innings. But he was far from sharp. The thing I am starting to notice about Looper is that he is either really "on" or really "off" and you can tell very early in a game which Looper is pitching. But with Todd Wellemeyer's elbow discomfort, Looper is more important than ever to this rotation.
What Went Right:
1. Skip Schumaker - He was 2 for 4 with the Cardinals' lone RBI and a stolen base. He is now hitting .299.
The loss puts the Cardinals at 36-27, 9 games over .500, and 3 1/2 games behind our enemy the cubs. Tomorrow, Adam Wainwright gets the nod for the good guys. But I HATE playing indoor baseball and I hate Minute Maid Park.
