ST. LOUIS The Cardinals are not promoting top pitching prospect Shelby Miller just so he can sit on the bench and experience life in the big leagues for the first time in his career. They expect him to contribute to their playoff push.
The highly hyped Miller will officially be added to the roster Tuesday, barely three years after the Cardinals selected him out of high school in the first round of the 2009 draft. They are rewarding him for a strong second half at Triple-A, but also counting on him to bolster their pitching staff.
"It was really something where we feel he can help us right now," general manager John Mozeliak said. "If you look back at how hes pitched the last six, seven weeks, hes really turned the corner and when you look at the composition of our club right now we felt he would be a nice injection into that."
