Many St. Louis Cardinals fans had to be encouraged by the club’s consistent offensive output Monday night at Busch Stadium. The hitters battered Colorado pitching on the way to a 9-3 final score. The primary damage was inflicted during the fifth through eighth frames as the Cards crossed the plate each frame, scoring seven runs. I have no idea if registering one big scoring inning is any better or worse than the drip-drip-drip of hanging a row of non-zero numbers next to one another. Still, I was curious about the latter. How often recently have the Cardinals scored in at least four consecutive innings? Researcher Tom Orf looked up the data for 2011 and 2012 to date. It occurred three prior times this season and five times last year. Not surprisingly, St. Louis won each game. At least two of them were huge wins.
