St. Louis Cardinals ace pitcher Chris Carpenter could miss Opening Day while recovering from a neck injury.Carpenter threw a bullpen session Friday and is scheduled to throw another Sunday, but his status for the opening game of the season is up in the air, according to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. When asked it Carpenter would be ready for the meeting with the Miami Marlins on April 4, Matheny said that "would be pushing it."Carpenter is nursing a bulging disc in his neck, which was earlier thought to be nerve damage. He threw 30 fastballs Friday and told reporters he was feeling fine after the warmup session. If Sunday’s bullpen session goes well, Carpenter will throw in live batting practice. Although, don’t expect to see the righhander take the field in Grapefruit League action.Carpenter posted an 11-9 record and a 3.45 ERA in 13 starts last season. He went 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in the postseason, helping the Cardinals win the World Series.
