ST. LOUIS David Freese could easily influence many of his 146,450 Twitter followers to help vote him to the All-Star Game in Kansas City next week if he wanted. But Freese, who is one of five National League players competing for the final All-Star roster spot, plans to let his teammates do that for him. Both Jon Jay and Daniel Descalso, who have a combined 90,000 followers on Twitter, have been campaigning for fans to vote for Freese and have tweeted instructions on how to do so. "They are taking care of it," Freese said. "I'm sure Twitter is rolling for everybody in this last five. I'm going to sit back. There are a lot of people helping me out and the support is there. We'll let it ride out. "It's just fun to be in the final five with that company, we're going to have some fun with it and see how it plays out. I wish we all could go. Who knows what will happen." Chipper Jones seems to be a sentimental pick because of his plans to retire at the end of the season. But rookie phenom Bryce Harper has drawn plenty of interest and will likely receive plenty of support as well. Braves outfielder Michael Bourn and Arizona infielder Aaron Hill are also among the final five players vying for a trip to Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Freese is certainly a deserving candidate. He went 3-for-4 with three singles in the Cardinals' 8-2 win over the Colorado Rockies Monday night to raise his batting average to .286. The 2011 NLCS and World Series MVP already has 48 RBI and a career-high 13 home runs. "My chances are tough I think," Freese said. "With the crew that I am in company with, it's going to be tough. Chipper is in his last year and Harper obviously has gotten a lot of attention and the other guys are deserving. It's a privilege and a blessing to get picked by Tony and MLB to be in this last five. We'll see how it turns out." Former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is returning to the dugout one final time to manage the National League squad. And Freese said that's the main reason he's hoping to make the team. "For me it's not about going to the All-Star Game," Freese said. "I've thought about going to the All-Star Game and it's about playing for Tony one more time. When he said he would have all the coaches back, that would be awesome to be a part of that one more time, in Kansas city, close to home, a great park, great fans, in the state of Missouri. It would be cool. We'll see how it plays out." The Cardinals certainly have done plenty of campaigning for Freese. They reminded fans to vote for him before he batted in the second inning Monday and have tweeted out the link for fans to vote as well. And others are helping get the word out as well. St. Louis Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk reminded his 28,000 followers to vote for Freese on his Twitter account @shattdeuces and the Blues retweeted the message to their 88,000 followers. Descalso tweeted to Golden State Warriors forward and St. Louis native David Lee and reminded him to, "make sure you get your vote in for @dfreese23 to claim the last NL All-Star spot." "I know he's got a couple of other guys that are going to be pushing hard all across baseball," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. "But David has a very strong following here and has had a strong season, so hopefully he gets a good push." Fans can vote for Freese by texting N2" to 89269 or online at MLB.com. Voting ends Thursday at 3 p.m. central time. The Cardinals plan to give one fan who votes for Freese four Field Box tickets for the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug 18.
