St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina did not play in Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins due to irritation in his right knee. The problem started Friday night. Initial reports are that the problem is not serious, but, as MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports, Molina left Busch Stadium before Saturday's game ended to get an MRI on his knee. Molina, bothered by right knee irritation, was unavailable today. Left ballpark late in game for MRI. #STLCards optimistic it's not serious. — Jenifer Langosch (@LangoschMLB) July 6, 2013 The MRI results are due Sunday morning. The Cardinals are confident that the problem is not serious, but they sent Molina for the exam for precautionary reasons. Manager Mike Matheny said after the game that Molina could possibly play on Sunday. Said Matheny, "He could be good enough to go tomorrow. We just want to rule things out and get a good look at it." After somewhat of a rough stretch and a Pittsburgh Pirates hot streak, the Cardinals find themselves trailing Pittsburgh by one game in the N.L. Central, and they do not want to lose Molina for any length of time. Molina is a fan favorite and a huge reason for the Cardinals' success since he came up in 2004. He had surgery on the same knee in 2007. Molina is having a career year in 2013, hitting .346/.388/.490 with an OPS of .878. He also has 6 HR and 45 RBI and a WAR of 3.7 in half a season. All of this has earned him the starting catcher spot in the upcoming All-Star game and puts him in the running for N.L. MVP should he maintain any semblance of this pace. The St. Louis Cardinals are unsure whether Yadier Molina will be available Sunday as they try for their first three-game home sweep of the Miami Marlins in 13 years.
