DALLAS The St. Louis Cardinals have made a new contract offer to free agent first baseman Albert Pujols and the club is waiting to hear back from his agent Dan Lozano. General manager John Mozeliak confirmed to a group of reporters in his suite at the Hilton Anatole Tuesday evening that he made a new proposal earlier in the day with Lozano but refused to offer any other details. Asked about a potential timetable for a decision to occur, Mozeliak said, "It sounds like it's moving but as far as conclusion, I couldn't tell you. But I would say that I get a sense it's sooner than later." Given the chance to say whether the ball was in the Cardinals' court or Pujols' group, Mozeliak replied, "theirs." The Miami Marlins reportedly made a 10-year offer for the three-time MVP earlier in the day Monday for at least 200 million. It's unclear how long the Cardinals' latest offer was but its believed they would be reluctant to give him ten years. Pujols, who turns 32 in January, has seen his batting average and on-base percentage drop in each of the past four seasons. His slugging percentage has also dropped more than 100 points in the last three seasons. The Cardinals are apparently waiting to hear back from Lozano, who could be mulling over the two offers and communicating with Pujols on the next course of action. "There's always still a chance we'll have another conversation on it today but I don't know if we will or not," Mozeliak said. There appears to be no hard deadline from the Cardinals or Pujols's group on when a decision needs to be made. But the sooner the decision the better for the Cardinals, who have several other areas to address once Pujols' status is finalized. "I don't like to speak for anyone but I do get a sense that they are wanting to move this forward," Mozeliak said. Asked again about the pace of where things stood, Mozeliak added, "The phone call could change directions at any time." Mozeliak declined to offer a level of optimism regarding a potential deal. "I hate handicapping these things," Mozeliak said. "I really don't know. I'm hopeful." It appears a decision could come down as early as Tuesday night. Stay tuned.
