ST. LOUIS - Skip Schumaker was fine with the Rally Squirrel stealing his thunder during the playoffs. Doing it on a baseball card is a different story. The Cardinals utility man was less than pleased Monday when Topps announced that the famous squirrel that dashed in front of Schumaker while he batted during Game 4 of the Division Series in October would be featured on one of his trading cards. "It's pretty ridiculous," Schumaker told FOXSportsMidwest.com. "I have a shoe on my baseball card. And a squirrel. It's pretty ridiculous." As part of a "Going Golden" promotion in the new 2012 Topps Series 1 set, the Rally Squirrel will be featured on special gold cards that will be inserted randomly into packs. The card says Schumaker's name in the bottom left corner but shows only the bottom of his right leg and cleat. Prominently featured instead is the Rally Squirrel darting in front of home plate. "It's not disappointing, it's just ridiculous," Schumaker said. "I don't know how else to explain it other than that. You expect to have some sort of action shot or something but it's like a mascot card to me. "I'm not frustrated, I just think people are going to look at it and laugh and that's ridiculous. I don't care about what I look like or anything but it's literally just a squirrel that has nothing to do with me." Cardinals fans immediately fell in love with the Rally Squirrel and the team store at Busch Stadium began selling Rally Squirrel shirts, stuffed squirrels and other related items for the duration of their playoff run. Rally towels handed to fans during playoff games in later rounds featured the Rally Squirrel and a playoff commercial produced by Major League Baseball even highlighted his dash across home plate. "The Rally Squirrel was fun during the series and it worked, so people had fun with it," Schumaker said. "I had fun with it and everybody thought it was a good thing for the fans. Torty was funny, but is Allen Craig going to have a tortoise on his card? I just think it's pretty ridiculous. "That's really the question. Are they just going to have animals on cards now?" Unknown is whether or not Topps plans to make a card for Torty', outfielder Allen Craig's pet tortoise who became an unofficial mascot for the Cardinals and their fans late in the season - before the Rally Squirrel arrived. Schumaker, who recently signed a two-year contract to stay with the Cardinals, hit .283 in 117 games with the Cardinals at second base and the outfield in 2011. A call to Topps for comment was not immediately returned. Schumaker will apparently have a traditional card also included in the set which he plans to buy. "I get them all the time and I save them for my kids so I guess it will be a good story," Schumaker said. "There are worse things in the world, no doubt about it."

Cardinals' Rally Squirrel Gets Baseball Card, Upstaging Skip Schumaker Once Again (Photo)

Cardinals outfielder Skip Schumaker's connection to the Rally Squirrel in St. Louis is going to last forever. Or, at least as long as few small pieces of cardboard hold up. MLB.com points out that Schumaker's 2012 Topps baseball card will feature just his right foot. The rest of the card is reserved for one pesky squirrel who became a national celebrity during last year&...

St. Louis Cardinals open virtual museum

As regular readers know, I have been a vocal critic of the St. Louis Cardinals for closing their museum back in 2008 and keeping it closed indefinitely. Since it may be some time (Phase 1 of Ballpark Village) until it re-opens, the club has invested in a virtual museum experience. The new website, www.cardinals.com/museum, has been launched today, January 30, with the goal of highlighting...

Ship McClellan To The Padres

It does seem odd that the St. Louis Cardinals are willing to send do-everything pitcher Kyle McClellan somewhere else.  He’s a local boy.  He moved through the ranks as a starting pitcher but willingly switched to the bullpen to help the big club, becoming a dependable late-innings guy.  Last season, after Adam Wainwright went down, he willingly switched back to the rotation...

First Bernie, Then Beltran

With Carlos Beltran leaving the Mets via trade and then signing with the Cardinals, there appears to be a lot of nostalgia going around about his career. In fact, it seems lately that Carlos Beltran and “Hall of Fame,” have been seen together in several discussions with Mets fans. Personally, I think the Hall of Fame is getting a bit too watered down. I love that a guy like Ron...

Roy Oswalt must deliver right answers to join Rangers

The team wonders about Roy Oswalt's commitment as it meets with the pitcher today.

Plan 9 from Kenmore Square

According to the latest rumors, Roy Oswalt is likely to end up in St. Louis. Edwin Jackson has "multiple" three-year offers, but may accept a one-year deal to see what his market is for next year. (Which puzzles me a bit, actually. Why not the bird in the hand?) The Sox are still mentioned as a possible one-year destination for Jackson. We're past plan B, and probably...

Top 50 Prospects: #4 – Shelby Miller

#4 Shelby Miller St. Louis Cardinals DOB: 10/10/1990 Previous Rank: 16 ETA: 2012 Aside from a team-issued suspension for being an idiot, Shelby Miller had an outstanding 2011 that only served to reinforce his spot as the top righty in the Minor Leagues.  He posted a 2.77 ERA in 25 starts across two levels including his final stop in Springfield where he collected 16 Double-A starts...

Balpark Village: A Failure Slowly Revealed

Ballpark Village. It's been a whipping post for this site since our inception and as the Cardinals admission of failure slowplay moves towards it's ultimate cresendo, another tasteful admission of failure has been launched. It's called the St. Louis Cardinals Virtual Hall Of Fame.A well constructed web site worth lauding. You know, if it had an accompanying Hall Of Fame...

Roy Oswalt and the Rangers

This post is quite a bit shorter than our normal fare here. We’re going to experiment with some quicker news analysis pieces for things that are still churning through the rumor mill. Don’t worry, these pieces won’t take the place of the more in-depth articles you’ve come to expect from the site. A few weeks ago, I talked about how Roy Oswalt could end up...

BaseballHQ on Cardinals Prospects: 2012

In the first of a three-part series, we highlight the top 15 St. Louis Cardinals prospects from the Minor League Baseball Analyst with the details as to why they’re ranked where they are.

Source: Oswalt will meet with Rangers Monday

The Rangers are scheduled to meet with free agent right-handed starter Roy Oswalt on Monday, a source confirmed Sunday afternoon.

Oswalt not short on suitors for his services

Roy Oswalt has been in the top six in the National League Cy Young Award balloting six times. If you need a guy for Game 7 in a World Series, you could do a whole lot worse than the man from Mississippi.

Astros GM Luhnow begins executing his plan

When the Astros approached him about their general-manager vacancy, Jeff Luhnow started to type out all the ideas that had been percolating in his mind over the course of eight years in the baseball business with the St. Louis Cardinals.
