ST. LOUIS - Like the rest of the baseball world, Skip Schumaker sat back and watched as Albert Pujols weighed free agent offers and tried to decide where he wanted to play next season. But unlike most, Schumaker's future was directly related to Pujols' decision. With the Cardinals needing every possible penny to try and bring back their slugger, the arbitration eligible Schumaker might have been non-tendered by the club and made a free agent had Pujols returned to St. Louis. Pujols ultimately signed with the Anaheim Angels and the Cardinals were able to use some of the money they saved to sign the versatile Schumaker to a two-year contract before the non-tender deadline Tuesday night. "It kind of came somewhat quick," Schumaker said. "Everything kind of hinged on what Albert was going to do, I assume. Everyone wanted to see what kind of deal he was going to get or if he was coming back and then pick up the pieces from there. "I'm excited to be back. It's all I've known. St. Louis is my baseball home. I'm excited about it." The thought of becoming a free agent for the first time in his career didn't excite Schumaker, who added, "You would have to figure out what your other options were on the free agent market and I didn't really want to go that route. "My family is comfortable in St. Louis. I'm comfortable. Why wouldn't you want to play in front of three million fans every year? I've been with this organization since 2001 so I'm just really comfortable here and I'm excited. Plus I like to win so it's a good deal." The left-handed hitting Schumaker hit .283 with 19 doubles and 38 RBIs for the Cardinals in 367 at-bats. He spent a month on the disabled list with a strained right biceps and struggled at the plate when he returned. After getting his timing back, Schumaker hit .339 (77-for-227) during a three-month stretch from June 5 to September 4 to raise his average to a season-high .303. Schumaker also made great strides defensively, committing just seven errors in 397 chances over 739 innings at second base. But despite the improvements both at the plate and in the field, the veteran doesn't figure to see regular time at second in 2012. Dan Descalso, who contributed mostly at third base in place of David Freese during his rookie year in 2011, is expected to compete for playing time at his natural position of second base. Tyler Greene, who was slated to be the starter at shortstop had the Cardinals not re-signed Rafael Furcal, likely will be in the mix for time at second base as well. That leaves Schumaker as the potential odd man out to serve as the club's fourth outfielder and likely fill a utility role off the bench. "I've talked to everyone about it and Descalso is definitely going to see time at second and Greene is going to give Furcal a couple days off here and there if he makes the club out of spring," Schumaker said. "You never know. Rookies go into funks here and there and if I need to give them a break or whatever it is, I'll be ready. "However the season pans out, whether it's an injury or whatever, I'll be ready to play every day. Whether I'm in the lineup or not, it doesn't matter. I'll be ready for whatever role they want me for." Schumaker is just glad to be back. And the Cardinals appear glad to have him.

Albert Pujol’s Wife sounds off on Christian radio

We believe in the higher power of money T.. Albert Pujols’s wife took offense to a story run in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about a St. Louis church that is collecting unwanted Pujols gear for an L.A. homeless shelter…Speaking on St. Louis Christian radio station JOY-FM, Deidre Pujols said, “the devil has overplayed his hand because I have Christian folk trying...

Cards sign Schumaker for 2 years, cut Theriot

Second baseman Skip Schumaker has agreed to a $3 million, two-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, who did not tender a contract offer to infielder Ryan Theriot before Monday night's deadline.

Leave You With a Smile

I’ve been meaning to write an Albert Pujols article for my own website. Since this website covers the Cardinals I figure I might as well use it as my weekly Royals column here at I70 Baseball. How does that work if this is supposed to be a Royals column? I’ll get there. I am a Royals fan first. After that I am a baseball fan. I have enjoyed Pujols’ career from a distance. I...

Poor, poor Albert: La Russa says Pujols ‘in pain’ over decision

You probably don't have to go too far in St. Louis these days to find a person who believes that Albert Pujols' heart was two sizes too small when he signed his mega contract with the Los Angeles Angels. But to hear Tony La Russa tell it, the complete opposite might actually be true. In fact, if you listen to Pujols' old skipper, it sounds like the star is increasingly...

Reds have Gained by Doing Nothing

Scroll through the off-season transactions list on the MLB website and you won't likely find the Reds on there much, if at all. As a matter of fact, the team has been about as active lately as a box of lava rocks. But despite their unwillingness to pull the trigger on any sort of deal, they still continue to win without making a single move. How so you ask? Let me give you five...

Who's still in Fielder market, who's not

Albert Pujols will turn 32 next month. It's very possible that his best seasons are behind him. He just signed a 10-year, 254 million contract with the Angels. Prince Fielder, 27, is entering his prime. He had the better 2011 regular season. Scott Boras can argue that Fielder will outperform Pujols over the next decade and is therefore entitled to a larger contract. Frankly...

Show-Me Sports Law

Guest post from Dr. Anastasios Kaburakis, a professor at the John Cook School of Business, Saint Louis University:After St. Louis’ beloved Cardinals lost Albert Pujols to the L.A. Angels last week, there was quite a discussion on how a small market like St. Louis can compete in intense, financially challenging times, and indeed in a cut-throat industry like sports. St. Louis ranks...

Why Not Tyler Greene At Second Base?

Since failing to resign Albert Pujols to a long term contract extension, the St. Louis Cardinals have been quite active in filling key holes in the team's roster. The Cardinals brought back shortstop Rafael Furcal and resigned Skip Schumaker, who is expected to fill more of a reserve role for the Cardinals in 2012. An interesting member of the leftover roster from last season...

Riding the Pine…Random Baseball Thoughts

It’s really been too long since I’ve sat down and really wrote about baseball. Sure, I’ve started doing Bullpen Banter with Russ, but I really haven’t looked at much going on in the world of baseball. - This has been a crazy off-season in St. Louis; one that has caused the World Series to be over-shadowed. It’s hard to believe the Cardinals just won...
