This time, Adam Wainwright left little doubt he should stay on the mound and keep pitching. Mike Matheny let him go, even when things became a bit dicey in the eighth. Wainwright tossed a five-hitter to become the NL's second 11-game winner, Matt Adams had his first two-homer game, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Oakland Athletics 7-1 Saturday. Wainwright (11-5) tied Washington's Jordan Zimmerman for most wins in the NL. He struck out eight and walked two in a 112-pitch performance for his fourth complete game this year and 15th of his career. "I came out very focused and executed my plan for the most part," he said. "I had the two late walks that kind of chapped me. Any time you're going late in the game like that giving yourself a chance to win, your team a chance to win, that's what you want. Every starter's goal is when you start the game to throw the last pitch of the game, too." Wainwright appeared to have no issues Saturday af...

Preview: Cardinals turn to Wainwright in Oakland

The St. Louis Cardinals have boasted baseball's best starting rotation this season. But lately, it's buckled, along with the Cardinals' NL Central lead. After another uncharacteristically poor pitching performance, St. Louis will look to staff ace Adam Wainwright to right the ship Saturday against the Oakland Athletics. The Cardinals starters' ERA of 3.14 this...

St. Louis Cardinals: Bigger Upside, Michael Wacha or Carlos Martinez?

As St. Louis Cardinals fans look to the future of the starting rotation, who has the bigger upside–Michael Wacha or Carlos Martinez? Both are currently down at Triple-A Memphis, but for different reasons. Wacha is down to conserve his arm by limiting his innings, while Martinez is there to stretch his arm out to be more prepared for the starter role in the future. Both have bright...

Are The St. Louis Cardinals Even Good?

As the calendar turns over to July, the Cardinals sit at 49-32, in second place in the toughest division in baseball.  They have a .605 winning percentage, have scored over 400 runs (3rd in MLB) and are also amongst the leaders in OBP and batting average. If you're the Marlins or the White Sox, then this might qualify as the single stupidest headline of 2013. ...

Revisiting the Cardinals Top 20 Prospects

Entering the season, the St. Louis Cardinals wealth of top notch prospects was the spotlight of all organizations in baseball. But the season has proven that depth, not names, is truly the strength of the system. Over the course of the season, the youth has been heavily leaned on at a record clip to help the team have the strong start it has enjoyed. Over the course of only half...

Food poisoning sidelines Cardinals' Adams

First baseman Matt Adams has been scratched from the St. Louis Cardinals lineup as a result of food poisoning. Adams hit two home runs in Saturday's 7-1 win over the Athletics and was penciled in the seventh spot in the Cardinals batting order again on Sunday before manager Mike Matheny made the decision to pull him from the lineup. Ty Wigginton took Adams spot in the infield...

Series Preview: A's winning the unconventional way

ST. LOUIS - Over their past 162 games, only one team in the majors has won 100 games. It's not the Cardinals. It's the team the Cardinals are facing this weekend. That's right. The Athletics' 100-62 record since last July 2 is the best in the majors (The Cardinals, at 95-66, are tied for the fourth-best). The A's can't be accused of buying success on the...

McNeal: Five key issues facing the Cardinals

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals have to be content to reach the midpoint of their season on a pace to win 98 games. Of course, they also have to be concerned following a 14-14 June during which starting pitchers not named Adam Wainwright combined for a 5.40 ERA. Which brings us to this: Should the Cardinals be more content or concerned about the 81 games left in their regular season...

Parker Injured, A’s Fall to Cards

Jarrod Parker came into the game having allowed just 11 runs over his past six starts (4-0), and was on a roll again Saturday afternoon, allowing just two hits into the fourth inning before falling off the mound and grabbing his right hamstring in agony, and leaving the game. It was seemingly turning into a pitcher’s duel with St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright matching zeros with Parker...
