St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran left Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday night after banging into the bullpen fence in right field at Fenway Park. Beltran robbed Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz of a grand slam in the second inning, turning the deep fly ball into a sacrifice fly. Beltran left the game in the third inning and appeared to be in serious pain. He went to a local hospital to undergo tests. X-rays on his injured ribs came back negative, which means he likely escaped a serious injury. He will be considered day-to-day and his availability for Game 2 on Thursday night is uncertain right now. The 36-year-old outfielder went back against the low wall in right at Fenway, which is only about five-and-a-half feet tall. He caught Ortiz’s deep fly as he reached over the fence. It appeared he actually hit the fence before making the catch, which made the play even more impressive. Beltran’s heroics didn’t mean much, the sacrifice fly gave the Red Sox a 5-0 lead, and they went on to win 8-1. Beltran began holding his side and pressing his chest immediately after making the play. In the bottom of the third Jon Jay entered the game in center field, while Shane Robinson shifted from center to right. If Beltran misses any time it would be a serious blow to the Cardinals who showed zero offensive spark in Game 1. The eight-time All-Star is one of the game’s best postseason hitters of all-time. He entered this year’s World Series hitting .337 with 16 home runs and 37 RBIs in 45 career postseason games. He has also scored 44 runs, stolen 11 bases and has a .724 slugging percentage. In the National League playoffs this year, Beltran had 12 RBIs. He struck out in his only at-bad Wednesday night.
