When Kevin Youkilis went on the DL a fews ago, Carlos Delgado was a low risk, potentially high reward signing for the Red Sox. Delgado’s value hinged on his ability to hit for power, and more importantly stay healthy.
To this point in the minors, neither has been the case, and one is forced to wonder whether the 38-year-old first baseman will be able to contribute at the big league level…
Delgado’s minor league deal, signed on August 7th, stipulates that he can become a free agent if he’s not called up to the Majors by September 1st. That may be difficult given the fact that Delgado is currently on the disabled list and hasn’t played in a week.
Delgado (currently with Triple A Pawtucket) was placed on the DL with soreness in his back and hip, and now only has a week to prove that he’s worthy of a roster spot in Boston. In 5 games with the Paw Sox before being shut down, Delgado was 3 for 13 (all of which were singles) with 6 strikeouts.
