COMMENTARY | On Monday we wanted to know where Cards fans thought Carlos Martinez should start the season. This is a very open-ended question as we made no assumptions about Jaime Garcia‘s health. At this point we know there will be a starting spot open and wondered if Cardinal Nation would like to see Martinez there. As of Tuesday night, 46% of the voters want him in the rotation, 40% want him in the bullpen, and 14% want him in the starting rotation of the Memphis Redbirds. A couple of weeks ago, we asked who should be the fifth starter and Joe Kelly ran away with the vote. I am surprised to see the rotation come out on top for Martinez. With all of that said, I agree with our voters. I think Carlos Martinez should start the season in the starting rotation of the St. Louis Cardinals. While we didn’t make any assumptions in the question, I am assuming that Jaime Garcia will be ready in May. This allows Martinez to get 4-6 starts before either moving to the bullpen or the Memphis rotation. Unless Martinez is lights out in those starts and Garcia is not ready, I would still highly consider moving him to protect his innings. If he was in the bullpen or down I-55 at AutoZone Park, his innings could be watched carefully. With all of that said, I am a strong proponent against innings limits, see: Strasburg, Stephen. When it comes to the bullpen or Memphis, I would prefer the bullpen because there could be several concerns with it as I mentioned in the poll question post. There are several question marks, and while Martinez is somewhat of a question himself, his dynamic ability would be huge in the 8th inning. Could I be living in fantasy land? Probably. I think the odds are slim that Martinez is in the rotation on the flight home from Jupiter. As of today, March 4th, I think Joe Kelly is in the driver’s seat for the last spot, and with his late season performance last year, its hard to argue against that. I believe that Kelly is somewhat flawed and could be exposed over time, while Martinez has that top-of-the-rotation stuff. The good news is we only have 26 days until Opening Day when a lot of our questions will be answered. Follow me on Twitter @CardinalsFarm or on Facebook.
