Found April 21, 2013 on Atlanta Bullpen:
Uggla often starts slow and picks it up as the season progresses Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has inserted two bench players into today’s starting line-up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates will send left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez to the mound today.  Sanchez has a 12.96 ERA through two starts this season.  His last appearance was this past Tuesday night against the Cardinals when the game was called after 2 innings.  Sanchez gave up 2 runs in 2 innings. Ramiro Pena will bat second and play second base in place of the usual starter, Dan Uggla.  Uggla strained a calf muscle in the cold Pittsburgh air last night and came out in the 4th inning.  He is listed as day-to-day. Reed Johnson will take over in right field today for Jason Heyward and bat 6th.  The right-handed hitting Johnson has been very good against left-handed pitchers in his career with a .310 average and .366 on-base-percentage. In the past four games the Braves offense has been shut out twice and...

Braves Pitchers Cracking the WHIP

Braves pitchers have been lights out this season Braves pitching has been outstanding in 2013 and the team ERA (2.19) is a full run less than the next best team in the National League (LA Dodgers 3.26).  ERA is the stat most fans use to measure pitching, but WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) is the stat that many baseball experts think gives a better indication of...

Pittsburgh Pirates Make Atlanta Braves Walk the Plank

The Atlanta Braves were the leagues hottest team entering this weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the Bucs had different plans for the Braves.  After Atlanta won the first game of the 4 game series, the Pirates pitching staff stepped up and held this powerful Braves lineup to just 3 runs in the final 3 games.  Wandy Rodriguez pitched 7 shutout innings and the bullpen...

Game 18: Pirates 4 Braves 2

Here is Jonathan Sanchez's line from this afternoon:  3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K And here is Kris Medlen's line:  6 IP, 7 H, 3R, 1 BB, 6 K That's not a line that would seem to bear well for the Pirates, but they found a way anyway today, mostly on the bullpen and on Russell Martin. The bullpen was excellent today. Combined, they went six shutout innings...

Game 17 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (13-3) at Pirates (8-8) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs go for two in a row against the Braves tonight at PNC. It’s Andrew McCutchen bobblehead night, so there should be a solid crowd (which is good, since there haven’t been any good crowds since the opener). A win would clinch a series split for the Bucs, which would be a very strong result...

Pirates 3, Braves 1

James McDonald pitched six dominant inning and Gaby Sanchez hit a tiebreaking two-run home run Saturday night to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Pirates 4, Braves 2

What a homestand! The Pirates were somehow able to patch together a victory on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up an excellent series win over Atlanta. It was certainly a messy game, but that won’t stop any Bucco fan from being thrilled with the outcome. The main reason today’s win was so big was the pitching matchup. It was Jonathan Sanchez (ERA north of 12) against Kris Medlen ...
