MARYVALE, Ariz. There is no manager's office in Maryvale Baseball Park, so Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker conducted a media interview Thursday morning sitting on a bench in the shower room. Fortunately, nobody turned on the faucets, which was apropos because recent events would tend to rain on his parade. His bullpen is suffering an assortment of aches and pains, mostly minor, but there is one that could affect the make-up of his bullpen. It could scrap that plan to put Aroldis Chapman in the rotation and relegate him back to the bullpen, where he pitched last season. Left-hander Bill Bray continues to argue with a touchy groin, a groin that prevented him from participating in early-camp drills. He threw on the side a couple of times early this week, but when he tried to pitch a simulated game Wednesday he had to walk off because his groin was catching during his delivery. Bray, closer Ryan Madson and set-up man Nick Masset are undergoing treatment for nagging stuff that isn't considered serious. But Bray is fast falling behind in his spring preparation. Baker, though, smiled and said, "Fortunately, it is a luxury we have three of lefties in the bullpen, potentially. That would be Bray, Sean Marshall and Chapman, the fire-breathing Cuban who the club wants to groom as a starter, but could drop right into Bray's spot. "We have Chapman, if we need him. That's a pretty good back-up plan," Baker said "And as it is, we have six starters, anyway (Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Mike Leake, Homer Bailey and Chapman). So, we'll see." Injuries this early in the spring cause no loss of sleep in the Baker household. "I keep telling people that worrying does no good," he said. "Zero. If I could worry stuff to make it better, then I would worry away a lot of stuff to make it better. You deal with what's happening. "Every camp has somebody hurt all the time," he added. "You'd rather have it happen early versus late, plus the doctor assured us it is nothing serious," said Baker. "One is a groin (Bray), one is something that has happened before without problems (Madson's arm irritation) and one is just an arm that doesn't hurt, but is just tired (Masset). "That's why we say, 'You never have enough pitching,'" Baker added. Bray plans to rest for a few days, but how many day, Baker doesn't know and said, "No clue. We thought we gave him enough time off the first time. But there comes a point when we have to decide whether there will be enough time for him to get ready for the season." If Baker did worry, he'd worry, too, about rookie shortstop Zack Cozart, who had Tommy John surgery on his non-throwing left arm late last season. That, though, is not the problem. Cozart has some soreness in his throwing arm, forcing Baker to go easy on the hard work. "I haven't seen much of him at all," said Baker. "We're guarding him, too. He is ailing a little bit. His throwing arm is a little sore, so we're protecting him, going easy on him."
