This is some pretty upsetting news (via the Trib). Morton has a torn elbow ligament that will apparently put him out for the rest of the season. Charlie hit the DL after feeling pain on May 29, but the injury was reportedly minor. That doesn’t seem to be the case any more, although the team has not yet commented on the situation. Tommy John surgery requires about a year’s time for a full recovery. Obviously this hurts the Bucs in the short term. We’ve seen their struggles in the back of the rotation these last two days, and even though Morton wasn’t pitching great before the injury, he was a good bet to help the situation somewhat (especially if he would’ve started pitching better like the numbers indicated). Now, they’re still waiting on Jeff Karstens to recover and are going to have to use either Jeff Locke or Rudy Owens to replace Brad Lincoln or Kevin Correia, which they still seem hesitant to do. Additionally, this puts Morton’s future with the team in to some question. He’s al...

Gerrit Cole up to AA

Moving On Up: #Pirates top prospect Gerrit Cole will be promoted to @AltoonaCurve & make his Double-A debut on Wednesday 6/20. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) June 15, 2012 Not much of surprise here, and honestly, it’s about time. Cole has been posting solid numbers in Bradenton all season, and the two college pitchers that were drafted immediately behind him are already...

Pirates agree to terms with 45th overall pick Barrett Barnes

#TexasTech CF Barrett Barnes received a $1 million signing bonus from the #Pirates as 45th overall pick in #MLBDraft — Scott Lacefield (@ScottLacefield) June 14, 2012   This news is a whole lot better than pretty much anything else we’ve been hearing about the Pirates in the past couple days. Barnes, an OF out of Texas Tech, was rated as the 41st best prospect heading into this...

Bye bye Baltimore

Following the surprising and very upsetting news of Charlie Morton‘s Tommy John surgery, the Bucs could have used a nice lift from Erik Bedard and company tonight in Baltimore. They didn’t get it, and were blown out to complete a really awful series. Bedard was bad from the start in his former home ballpark. The O’s struck for four runs in the first inning…the dagger being...

Game 62 Live Chat: Pirates at Orioles

No pitching, no hitting, no win

If the Pirates wanted to win their sixth straight series for the first time since 1992, they needed to keep the offense going from Game 1 of the Baltimore series and lock down the pitching. They didn’t do either. The offense was back to scoring fewer than two runs for the 18th time this season and the pitching staff gave up at least 7 runs for a second straight night in the 7...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cleveland Indians – Game 63

First it’s with a heavy heart I acknowledge that apparently Root Sports has parted ways with Lacee Collins.  She got hit pretty hard, often on this blog, but my god did Pittsburgh fans eat her alive.  Hopefully she lands on her feet or heels or sneakers or whatever her preferred choice in footwear may be. [...]

GAMEDAY: Pirates at Orioles

Pirates (32-28) at Orioles (35-26) 7:05 PM EST–Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Sports During their recent stretch of of solid play, the Pirates have still had their fair share of ugly games. They’ve done a great job of “showering well” (as Clint Hurdle says) and shaking it off the next day, though, and that’s the goal tonight...

GAMEDAY: Pirates at Indians

Pirates (32-30) at Indians (32-30) 7:05 PM EST–Progressive Field, Cleveland Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Sports The Bucs will try and completely forget that awful Baltimore series as they head in Cleveland this week to take on the Indians for the weekend. About the Indians: A couple of strange similarities here: The Pirates and Indians have the same record, run differential...

Crushed in Charm City

The Pirates played a terrible game all around and dropped their second in a row to the Orioles, this time by a 7-1 blowout score. Kevin Corriea was bad: 6 innings, 10 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), only 1 strikeout, 1 walk, and 1 homer. We’ve seen him get away with some mediocre outings that could have been a lot worse lately, but that wasn’t the case today. Baltimore took advantage...

Game 63: Orioles 12, Pirates 5

I was always a big Erik Bedard fan - his stuff when he was on was fantastic, and the 15 strike-out game he had against Texas was probably the best pitched game I've ever seen live (batter were literally going back to the dugout shaking their heads). It would have been nice to see him do well tonight (though not quite well enough to win), and it wouldn't have been terribly...

Series Preview: Pirates at Indians 6/15-17

The Indians were just swept by the first place Cincinnati Reds in a 3 game series and hope to turn things around as they return home to play the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates are also coming off a 3-game losing steak after being swept by the Baltimore Orioles. Tribe pitching was not as dominating against the Reds as it had been in the previous series with the Cardinals. Jeanmar...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Baltimore Orioles – Game 62

This is going about exactly as I expected.  One guy who is a very questionable starter and another who is in no way a starter going back to back against a really good team is a recipe for disaster. #Hurdled And this has been one of my main criticisms with Clint Hurdle and the Pirates [...]

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cleveland Indians – Game 64

I know blowouts suck, but losses like last night’s really frustrate me.  Failing to capitalize on huge opportunities seems like it is this teams calling card.   First Pitch:  4:05 PM EST Where To Watch:  Root Sports, MLB.TV, STO   Ubaldo Jimenez, RHP (28) Talk about a guy whose record is absolutely blowing away his actual [...]
